Anti pollution fault - is it time to de fap?

Morning guys - the never ending christmas tree has lit up again - this time says "Anti Pollution fault" and my engine management light has also come on with it and cruise control stopped working. I used to get the "fuel addative fault" but that disappeared a little while back....Couple of questions
- What is the anti pollution fault?
- can i ignore it?
- will it do the car any damage, or send the ecu into safe mode or something daft (if so how long will this take)?
- How do i turn it off.
Its strange, but the car seems to be going alot better now it is on!! might just be me!
I think it is time to "de-fap" the car. I am fine with the physical aspect of it - but its just the ECU part i cannot do. Can anyone do it on here for me?
Any links guides on the physical aspect of de-fapping the car?
It is a 406 2.2 HDI - 2001 executive.
Thanks guys!!

Anti pollution faults can cover a multitude of things but removing the FAP is cheap and quite straight forward, a few members have access to 170 bhp maps for the 2.2 so assuming your car matches the criteria it can be done for the price of a galletto (about £15 to £20) so worth doing as long as the mechanicals are in good order to take the extra oomph.
If the FAP blocks up beyond repair they're bloody pricey to replace!
In short if you can get the right map for your car from a forum member do it, if it doesn't cure all faults it still hasn't cost a lot and you'll have your own Galletto for future tinkering.
If you're not bothered about the extra horses Doggy can probably just remove the FAP from your existing map.

Great - again thanks, very useful info.
I will be in touch with Doggy and his kind offer - however the 170bhp map sounds interesting. PM me any details if you have some

Hi, lots of members here have generic maps for the 2.2Hdi - Doggy and myself to name but a few.
a 180bhp de-fap with EGR still fitted, a 180bhp de-fap with EGR removed and also a generic 200bhp de-fab non EGR map.
If you have a Galletto then the map of your choice can be emailed to you.
Please note, the maps I have are only for later 2.2Hdi's - I got them from Doggy so he can confirm this if needed.
The first thing I did with my 2.2Hdi was to de-fap it as it was in limp-mode and slowly choking......
Was cheap though..

Thanks guys - mine is 2001.
How do they cope on standard internals with the 180bhp map? and i take it the fuel economy takes a bit hit? Is it a wise move for a car with 130k?

My car had 180k before de-fap. I don't think mileage is a problem really, just make sure the car is properly serviced before and after to keep it nice. Use fully synthetic oil too.
Clutch is fine, economy is the same ( 41mpg round town ) as there is more torque so cruises lovely.
I have the extra power of course, doesn't mean you have to use it all the time, just on the odd occasion when some knob in an Audi think he is king of the road and I have to prove that he isn't..!!

Not wanting to put a slur on anyones character but having the extra power and not using it is a criminal offence!
If I could find a 2.2 I could afford I probably wouldn't have a clean license for very long!

Sounds great. My car is in tip top condition - my uncle owned it pretty much from new - and i have had it off him for 5 years. Never missed a service or oil change. I do it all myself.
Keen to get this done now. I take it i "de-fap" the car first then get it mapped? Who will do this for me? (PM if needed)
Pete

I'd get hold of the map first and a galetto, once you've successfully loaded the new map then get the hammer and chisel out.

hi guys, would the fap cause power delivery issues?
my problem is power delivery, the turbo is spooling fine and pulling fine but there seems to be no power below 2500-2800rpm, changed the TPS for one from a breakers yard but problem still persists.
also worth noting that the message "engine antipollution system defective" come up on the MFD
also woth noting that i changed the MAF a short while back which cured my earlier problem, checked this out but its the same whether connected or not.
car is a 2001 '51' 2.0 hdi 110 exc estate, just turned over 190500 miles.
any help will be apreciated.

No. Only 2.2 HDi's have particle filters, (at least we've never found a 110
yet that has one).
Suggest you get it diagnosed with PP2000
