chiping noise from engine

my newly acquired 2003 406 2.0 hdi has a chirping noise which i think is coming from the belt area, on a morning when it's cold it not there but once the car is warm i can here it.
it's like a chirping noise and only does it just as you apply or lift off the throttle ,are there any likely culprits i've heard about crank pulley issues but i don't think it's that and i've watched the belt and it's not flapping about unless it's just starting to go or maybe a tensioner or bearing problem ? :)

You could try removing the aux drive belt - it's ok to run the engine without it - make sure the noise stops.
Turn it off, check all the individual pulleys for play, roughness etc.
If it's the crank pulley, (& if your's is dual mass), you may find debris / rust in that area, or find you can move the outer part of the pulley relative to the core, (should only be a little 'give' in it).

If you don't find anything amiss, try a new belt

i don't thinks it's the crank pulley no sign of any metal filings ,i'll get the aux belt off and check the pulleys :)

Mine does the same, its the Dual Mass Flywheel springs rubbing against the side of the flywheel.
It is a bit annoying, but harmless. No solution except replacing the DMF.

had the aux belt off today, all the pulluys are fine including the crank pulley, ran the engine with the belt off and the noise is still there, it's coming from the gearbox end so looks like it's the dual mass.
the clutch is light and doesn't slip so i'm going to leave it for now.

The DMF is a known problem in these cars.
You can ear it chirping when you decelerate and when you turn off the engine.
The dealer whill charge about 1000€ for the parts and labour (DMF +clutch). If the clutch doesn't slip and you don't ear it banging they usually last quite a bit until you have to change it (done about 30k miles with mine like that and it is still going, but I manly drive on motorways and usually with cruise control on).

You can always change it to a single mass flywheel, it's cheaper, you don't have to worry about it anymore and apparently you can´t tell the diference.

it doesn't really bother me as it drives fine ,i can hear it also when i turn the engine off, there is no banging or clunking noise just the chirping noise when you start to accelerate or decelerate.
i fitted a single mass clutch to my old passat and it was great, that's the route i will be going if this gets any worse.

My 406 HDI estate did that. The mechanics told me it was a pressure gate spring for the turbo ... obviously talking ********* !
The clutch was changed and the noise went away. Unfortunately, the clutch then went away after 16 months. :frown:

It turned out the central spline in the clutch plate stripped completely ???. Faulty part? After 16 months and about 5000 miles.
Didn't trust the same engineer? to do the job again, so changed garages and had a solid flywheel and clutch fitted.
A little snappy on the clutch, but no chirping and a clutch that works.
The dual mass flywheel that was taken out fell to bits in my hand.

I'm confused (permanently), mines an 03 2.0 Hdi90 and been told it's not blessed with a DMF, only the 2.2's??????
mjb wrote:2.0 - is that the 90bhp or 110bhp? The hdi90 doesn't have a DMF.

The 110bhp 2.0 litre engines and the 136bhp 2.2 litre engines have DMFs :)
