I installed a 5 clock dash in January (many thanks to v6exec for enabling it), and since then I've spent my time dividing 50 by 3. I love having it though, it really responds to how hard you push the car.

Where the needle normally sits has gone up a bit recently -- presumably because of the hot weather.

I'm used to it sitting at 90 on the motorway or up to 90 + (50 ÷ 3) if I really push it, but recently it's been at least 90 + (50 ÷ 3) and today on a round trip to Peterborough doing 75 it was up to 90 + 2 × (50 ÷ 3), and only receding to the middle of the two marks. Water temperature constant at 90 all day long.



So what's normal?

I've got an app for that.....






Oh and before you get hung up on the maths, might I point out there's no gaurantee the oil temperature scale is linear?

That's perfectly normal behavior. Old temperature corresponds to how hard you drive the car, mine sits anywhere between 90 and the rightmost of the two ticks in the middle, depending on the weather, motorway driving, how hard I'm pushing it and so on.

As long as it stays below 140, don't worry about it.

I agree. Climbing the mountain roads in & out of Andorra last summer saw the oil temp approaching the red on the way up and dropping to 90 on the descents. Water temperature never changed.

Oil normally gets to 100 rising to 120+ under load, it dumps this heat into the water via a heat exchanger. The water will 'see' this rise in temperature but it won't show on the gauge. The thermostat will open fully until it can close slightly again to regulate the temperature.

Water temp gauges are deliberately insensitive, can you imagine driving a car showing the water temp rising and falling constantly? there's a lot of vehicles with NO temp gauge now, like it's none of our business

BTW an oil change will normally drop the oil temp by up to 10 degrees......for a few days

So, when settled the temperature was 90 + (2 x (50 ÷ 3)) - ((50 ÷ 3) ÷ 2), sounds about right to me

E39 BMWs have a really useless temperature gauge which gets to the dead centre of the 'ok' section by about 40c, then stays there. Normal water temperature on these V8s is about 110-115c. Apparently it dives off to the right as soon as it hits 120c, so the gauge is a complete load of feelgood BS...

There's no oil gauge either Something I intend to fix when I finish off the code for my onboard computer

Well I'm now dividing 50 by 6. I caught this today with PP2k reporting 76 degrees, so definitely not linear.

Well i have also saw the temperature with eobd bluetooth reading with torque app and mine also shows 10ºC less on the app than the actual gauge but i'm not worry about it, by the way with this app can i see the fuel that is being inject etc?

I don't know how to use it well, i'm thinking of geting lexia 3 myself, but it's a bit expensive.
