Hello everybody,

Just read the fault codes on my car using Neil's OBDII code reader, and it's come up with 2 faults.

P0400 & P0403

The book of words translates these as;

P0400 - EGR Flow Malfunction
P0403 - EGR Flow Circuit Malfunction

so......errrrrmmmm.......how do I put this..........

HELP! :?

right, egr is exhaust gas recirculation, usually, when you get those two fault codes, you may have two problems, it could be a dodgy air flow meter or egr solenoid, its hard to say which is at fault due to the nature of your running problem, did the fault codes erase?
did they come back straight away?
if they erased did the car run ok?
if its still running odd, try disconnecting the air flow meter, if the problem disapears then theres your problem, if it doesnt then, it could be the egr valve has seized or the solenoid has, but try disconnecting the air flow meter first

Saint James of Peugeotshire to the rescue, good on you.

We were a bit hesitant of erasing the codes, so we left them on there. Dai, I tried calling you earlier, my D9 Haynes manual doesn't cover the EGR valve for petrols, only diesel. But I would assume location is the same. Haven't had a chance to check the workshop manual yet.

Anyway, Dai, if you like give me a shout and we'll erase the codes and go out for a jaunt and see the outcome.

without erasing the faults is it still misfiring?
the egr wont cause a misfire
thinking about it, the misfire may be confusing the engine management into thinking the egr is playing up

James, I don't suppose you know the correct code for the plugs for the HPi do you?

The NGK ones that are in there at the moment are LZKAR7A, but having checked NGK's catalogue these are listed as being for the 1.2 renault clio & kangoo, so maybe they aren't strong enough for the HPi and that could be contributing to my problem?

The Bosch ones that were in there last time were ZR8TPP15, but I can't find them anywhere either.

The problem is that no-one seems to have this HPi engine listed, they all say "2.0l 16V is it?" to which I reply "yes, but not the one you've got listed there", then they look at me silly..... Halfrauds don't list it either and even NGK and Champion's online catalogues ain't got it. I've tried searching in all those places under Citroen too 'cos I believe they use the same lump in the C5 but still no joy.

Having failed to get a set of plugs I whipped the current ones out earlier and gave them a good clean. Started the car, message & EM light. Stopped and restarted, light went out, no message, Hoorah! Left her ticking over for a few mins while I locked up, then went for a test drive, but within a few miles there came the familiar beeb, message, EM light. So I reckon you're probably right that the plugs are at least contributing to the problem and now I'm on a refreshed mission to get hold of a set.

I still haven't seen Neil and his code reader yet to try clearing the codes, update on that to follow soon I'm sure... :?

right, it seems only bosch make the plugs for your HPi, and there dealer only, which is a right bugger, ngk frequently make plugs which arent up to the job, i get a lot of volvo 850's and v70's at work with a misfire and it turns out to be the spark plugs which are ngk, a set of genuine ones (at £48!) cures it, when you go to the dealer to get them, they will be in a pug box, but make sure there bosch not eyquem as there shite,
dont clear the codes until you've fitted the new plugs
and i would not drive the car any distance untill this is fixed, i have known cars to have a melted piston due to a misfire that was ignored
does it misfire at idle or throught the entire rev range?
does it feel like its on one cylinder or two?

It seems to misfire randomly, maybe just one or twice on the way to work (15 miles) when I'm cruising along at 70 it will just miss a beat or two, and sometimes (but certainly not always) when your sat at tickover it'll splutter a bit as if it's going to cut out, but only the one time it did actually cut out.

this could still turn out to be an egr fault after all, as the egr will only function once warmed up, at idle or when cruising
does it misfire when you first start it from cold?

Can't say I've noticed whether it does it when cold, which I suppose means it probably doesn't. I have certainly noticed it at a warm re-start though.
