Friend has transmission trouble ,cannot get 4gear, and was on the third used gearbox before he got one that fitted. These were from peugeot dismantlers aswell who said the all familar words this is the one. Car is 04 reg , how many different transmissions were fitted in the 406hdi. Fantastic site which i just found a few days ago, driving a 190000 90hdi since new 2001 and recently purchased a 245000 estate as back up which is fantastically going great for bicycle money.

Hi frankie and welcome aboard. 8)

Gearbox problems are not very common with 406's, the occasional notchy gearchange issue usually responds well to an oil change.

All 110 HDi's would have been fitted with an ML5 series gearbox, which had two variants, distinguishable by the gear change pattern. The earlier 'box has reverse straight back from 5th and on the later type reverse is beside 1st and you lift a collar to select reverse.

AFAIK either kind will work, but the gear lever / cables are different and would have to be swapped as well if you wanted to change types.
