Transmission fault, can anyone help with diagnosis??

I've recently joined the 406 masses, but within 2 months of buying the car, something catastrophic has failed in the transmission.
About a week ago, I noticed a faint rattling coming from the engine bay area whilst cornering at low speed which led me believe a CV joint may have been on the way out. This progressively got worse until it was happening most of the time in lower gears at higher speeds and not only when cornering. On the motorway in 5th, there was no rattle at all. The best way to describe the sound is it sounded like something was loose inside the gearbox or bell housing and was pinging about.
Today, it failed completely. I was on the motorway doing about 75 in 5th when there was a loud crunchy noise, it jumped out of gear, and the rattling was now very loud and painful sounding. I couldn't select a gear as I was slowing, but managed to coast to the hard shoulder where I stopped, turned the engine off and swore a bit. The strange thing was, after I restarted the car I managed to select reverse and tried all the other gears and they were selecting ok. I managed to limp off the motorway and get it home, and I've left it since. The rattling is very bad now but the gears do select and I do get drive, but the gears are very whiny. There was one instance where I couldn't get a gear again on the limp home, but a restart solved that again.
If anyone can help diagnose the issue, it would be greatly appreciated, I can decide if it's worth repairing or not then.
Many thanks
