Hi, please help with advice.
A mate is doing our timing belt and water pump etc.
He has the locking tools but is troubled by the markings not lining up.
I don't have the technical knowledge to assist but will pass on any advice or articles.
This is what he explained to me:
Engine xu1 j4r
problem is that the timing lock marks do not line up
looks like its about 10 15 degrees off lock up point
with cams locked up the crank shaft pin is 165 degrees out
with crank pullie in the reverse position it lines up
looking at outside of pullie in your hand the keyway at 3 on a clock the reference hole is around just past 12, 76 degrees anti clockwise

You gurus will understand what he means and hopefully link to an article for this or give advice if he can leave it as is and replace the belts etc as it runs where it is currently and the computer must adjust if the timing is out?

The pullie fell off which prompted this repair as the belt has not been changed in 100k.

Thank you so much and look forward to the helpful knowledge this forum provides.
Kind regards
Rob

First thing to do is to take out number 1 spark plug (furthest from cambelt end) and fit a long screwdriver on top of the piston, then carefully turn the engine until the piston (screwdriver) is at top dead centre (highest point).

Now look at where the timing pin holes for the camshafts are, they should be at 7 o clock on the left pulley and 5 o clock on the right pulley.....if the holes don't line up turn the engine again until the screwdriver is at tdc and check the timing pin holes again...keep doing this until the holes line up with the screwdriver at tdc.

When you are confident the holes are lined up mark the position of all the pulleys, including the crank pulley, with tippex or paint so you have a reference point if anything moves.

You did mean XU10?

My friend says, when cams at lockup, 5oc on inlet and 7oc exhaust.
the crankshaft of xu engine is not at tdc, but about 'half' way down ,a french car club uk gave closer position, this engine at cam lock up has crankshaft lockup hole closer to 6oc position. than to the 12oc.
I would expect it to be, about 165deg rotated,
on close examination of old pulley a yellow mark has been put on with enough trace to check old position and it aligns with new pulley.

Typical! There had to be one engine my method doesn't work on

All you needed to do was line up the cam locking holes and mark the crank pulley position.

Does his reply show that he has successfully lined the marks up?

Right, now that i've looked in my timing belt book (why didn't i do that before?) the crankshaft timing pin hole is set at about 11 o clock with the left cam at about 7 o clock and the right cam at about 5 o clock.

Maybe if the crank hole is at nearly 6 o clock you should rotate the engine until the crank hole is at 11 o clock and the cam holes as described.

It could be that the belt has been replaced before and someone made their own mark on the crank pulley (something I do often).

Realistically, if the cams are locked with pins you could just mark the position of the crank pulley and replace the belt from there....it would be sensible to lock the flywheel with a flywheel locking tool.

Hey Jasper, thanks for all your help. We got it back all done with no real problems. Strangely enough though we can now hear the belt noise. Friend said that it is 10ml wider; is this a known problem do you think?

if it has got a bit of belt noise........maybe the timing belt is too tight? slacken the tensioner a bit.

10mm wider? Maybe the belt is hitting the casing.

I would check the tension too, the belt may be too slack and hitting the casing or too tight and whining on the tensioner.
