Rocker cover gasket
I checked my dipstick for the first time since i change the oil back in may, it was between the two marks so i topped it up, i cant actually remember if i filled it or not, because i use the digital dipstick too much, but anyhow there is no harm in looking for oil leaks
The back exhaust studs on the gearbox side seem to have oil on them, as does most of the top of the engine on the gearbox side, how likely is the rocker cover gasket to leak? the only other part round this end looks like the vacuum pump, do they have a seal that could leak?
The rest of the car seems fine, no blue smoke, the crankshaft oil seal was changed when i did the timing belt as it was mucking up that side of the engine, but there was no noticeable effect on the oil level at the time.

I know it's "9/11", is Al Queda attacking western civilisation via a plague of leaky rocker box gaskets, or am I just paranoid?

Re: Rocker cover gasket
You sure it's not your air doser leaking? My original gasket wasn't leaking in the end, but it was good to eliminate it.

Re: Rocker cover gasket
Whats the air doser? Is that the thing that looks like a crankshaft breather pipe on the side of the engine?

Did you replace the doser or a seal going to it.

Re: Rocker cover gasket
I'm told (by Doggy IIRC) that on the 90 and 110 that if it's fitted then it simply closes the air intake on shutdown to prevent clatter and run-on. On the 136 it's something entirely different...FarmerPug wrote:What does it do though, ive heard it mentioned elsewhere?

Re: Rocker cover gasket
mine was leaking there too--gave the impression was the rocker cover gasket but was actually leaking from the air doser.
Take it off--two 10mm nuts I seem to remember then I put plenty of gasket sealer around it and bolted back on--oil never came back.

Re: Rocker cover gasket
But that pipe isnt it the one coming from the intercooler going to the intake manifold, should it be leaking oil? Or is the doser itself actuated by oil pressure, the pipe going to it looks more like a vacuum line.

Re: Rocker cover gasket
There's always a bit of oil in the intercooler, so oil just leaks from the butterfly hinge ..thing.

Re: Rocker cover gasket
If there is oil in the intercooler will it harm the turbo, or has it originated from the turbo?
Re: Rocker cover gasket
Depends how much oil is in there mate.FarmerPug wrote:If there is oil in the intercooler will it harm the turbo, or has it originated from the turbo?
If its just abit iwouidnt worry about it.. I think its normal to find a little bit in the intercooler or pipework.
I've seen oil mist in a few 406s.
