Is Miss Pug dying?

Post by Sonia406 »

I did the spark plugs at the weekend, rocker cover leaked loads of oil into the spark plug wells..
Smoked like a trooper on start up.
Anyway, I just had another peek and again (although the rocker cover was tightened) they are full of oil again.

A little worried the oil smells of petrol - is she dying?
Now it's still leaking into the spark plugs I was considering getting a rocker cover gasket - is it worth it?
Are we talking about piston rings not sealing on the cylinder wall (is that the rocker cover thing?)
Or fuel pressure regulators etc?

I have a feeling in my stomach she's on her way out - please someone say different............

How would oil & fuel end up on top of the spark plugs? All the smoke was what happened to the oil once it got into the cylinders: this might have been a bad move as your cat won't have like it. Anyway, I'm not sure about the smell of petrol (I'm hoping that's just you worrying too much) but the best way to sort out the oil leak is to change the gasket. Then we can address any further leaks, be they real or imaginary :P

A smell of petrol from the oil drained from a petrol engine is normal, my old 2.0 Montego's oil stank of it at 100k. It was still as fit as a butcher's dog at 225k, when it finally died of rust.

I should think it did after that many miles :P but yes petrol-engined oil does stink of petrol and diesel oil smells kinda burnt.

This problem above is quite simple; oil is leaking from the rocker gasket when the engine's running and the lowest point for it to collect is the plug wells eventually you'd get a miss-fire.

Some cars have a main gasket (in the engine-shape you'd expect) and also circular O-rings to seal the plug wells but I can't tell if yours will have O-rings but it is common for these to be the problem rather than the 'general' gasket around the edges.

Right boys

Thanks for your help!

I've ordered both gaskets, £9 each and picking up tomorrow. Also ordered a cam shaft oil seal...

Just hope she is going to make it. It has me quite worried!!

Petrol oil smelt from dipstick and oil filler cap...

Spark plugs again, swimming in oil. :(

Can you pull up the injected fuel rates on PP on a p-p-petrol? Maybe an injector is over-doing it :?

And short trips door to door will contaminate the oil more readily but it'd be worth checking the fueling or doing a brim to brim MPG test, anything less than 20mpg points to a problem.

it will just be the rocker cover gasket leaking and the engine oil always picks up a little fuel in the sump, when going around the pistons, etc.
change the rocker cover gaskets (make sure the surfaces are clean before fitting the new ones) and monitor it.

Yeah I agree .. it will be just the gasket that's fubard.
Iwouidnt worry to much..

I'd use a rag wrapped round a screw driver to soak up the oil to save it going into
The pots ..

I do hope you are all right, She can't die, she can't go!!
A friend of mine said it would be signs of a head gasket going, but there are no signs whatsoever, temperature does not raise over 90, there is no mayonaise anywhere and she doesn't drink water....

I say there's no mayo, she had a bit of it after she'd been stood for a year but now with constant use she's perfect... just spewing out oil like there's no tomorrow......

Picking up the gaskets tomorrow... deciding if I am going to have a crack at it or pass it over to a new mechanic friend....
That said, my new mechanic friend also suggested it may be the rocker cover itself, he seems to think I will have a plastic one and they snap real easy....

Injured my back earlier carrying a wardrobe upstairs by myself so I am on strictly light duties for a while...
