406 HDI90 Fuel Filter Change

Hi all!

Happy to be part of this forum, as i'm very well pleased with my first diesel. Its a 2000 plate 406HDi 90 Rapier, in Red (urrgh) with the BOSCH fueling system.

I was looking at changing the fuel filter this Saturday, and have seen in previous posts that it is advisable to pour some injector cleaner into the (correct me if i'm wrong) fuel filter housing?

I couldn't find diesel injector cleaner, but bought a wee bottle of Redex for diesel injection systems. Would this do the trick? I'm also looking at taking the whole housing off, after reading a few posts about it. Will also be doing engine oil & filter, as this looks (like the rest of the car) to be very neglected :S

Couldn't find a guide to do the HDi90's fuel filter, so any links etc would also help.

Any pointers etc would be very welcome!

Cheers,

Benny

Is your filter housing this one?

Or this one?

You have me confused by saying it's a Bosch fuel system.
Drain off the fuel in the filter from the pipe at the bottom of the housing....no need to remove the housing.
Anyway if it's the top one you need to remove the pipes and fit a socket on the big nut and twist it 90 degrees to remove the top, take care to note how the seal and the metal ring inside fit.
Take note how the filter fits inside the housing before removing the old one then clean out the housing using brake cleaner.
Fit a new filter ans seal and screw on the housing top, making sure it sits properly.
Turn the ignition on and off a few times to prime the housing and start it up.

If your housing is the second one (Mahle/Siemens type) drain off the housing in the same way then remove the whole housing....2 small bolts, 10mm spanner/socket size.
Secure the housing and unscrew the large plastic ring on top of the housing being careful not to break off any pipes....easy done!!!

Take out the filter and remove the seal, clean out the housing with brake cleaner and fit the new filter and seal, smear some diesel around the new seal and screw on the housing top tightly....watch those pipes!!!
Refit the housing to the car and fit the pipes, except the outlet pipe....locate the priming bulb and put your finger over the outlet pipe and pump the bulb....keep lifting your finger to let the air out......when the diesel squirts out fit the pipe back on and start the car.

Not a fan of redex, I use injection cleaner, but it won't do any harm.

Mine does seem to be the first one, iirc, its the one used on Bosch fuel systems, and the latter is Siemens? Mine definately doesn't have a primer bulb, anyways.

Will be doing it tomorrow as i'm not working saturday, along with engine oil and filter change, so i'll post when I get that lot done :)

Many thanks!

The latter is Bosch as well but used on later cars - from 2002 onwards.

2.2s were Bosch up to 9001 (according to Service Box anyway...)

Just later cars. Motor factor parts manuals list them as Siemens but this is bollocks.

I just assumed my style was the Bosch, and i'm on a 2000 model year anyways, so I'm kind of sure I know what i'm doing!

Thanks for all the help guys, really cleared things up for me :) Will be doing the change today, one more question though (not worth starting a new thread me reckons);

How much engine oil should I put in as a rough guide (oil & filter)

Cheers!

About 4.5 litres - I usually add 4l using the scale on the 'can', check I've got some on the dipstick, start her up to fill the filter, leave to settle, top up as necessary.

(Gives me something to do while I clear up the inevitable mess).

Just to clear up my confusion....

Out of the dozens, nay hundreds, of fuel filters I've replaced, I've never seen the Bosch one with 2 pipes and big nut on a 90bhp model, the ones I've done have all been 110 models.

Obviously, that doesn't mean there aren't any :D
