Harmonic balancer/ crankshaft pulley
Ran into a problem today when I started the car sounded like the motor had thrown a rod, but no. the harmonic balancer is 2 parts molded together with rubber between i guess for shock absorption. Any ways the rubber was coming out of the center and the pulley was almost coming off!!!
as far as replacing this what should i know? should i replace other components with this?

No 3 is the toothed pinion that the cambelt is driven by. It's keyed onto the crank.

No it won't move, but if anything like the hdi crank pulley the bolt is done up very tight.

You will need to lock the crank somehow to get that nut off as they can be extremely tight. Just getting someone to press hard on the brake pedal while in gear, probably won't do it. You may need something like this...it bolts onto the gearbox flange and the teeth mesh into the starter ring gear and locks it solid.

As osk said, the cam pinion won't go anywhere...even though it only slides on and off the end of the crank, it's under belt tension, so will be held tight.

do i have any other option? has anybody made there own?
Let me tell you why, i am living in the Dominican Republic near the Haiti border in the middle of know where! i have ordered the part from the single dealer on the island which is in the capital Santo Domingo. it will arrive to my town by way of bus on a 5 hr ride.
so all the help you guys can provide is ceriously much more than you think it will!

I managed to undo all of mine so far by getting someone to REALLY press on the brake pedal in top gear, while I undid the nut, using an impact socket, 2 extension bars, (to get you outside the wheel arch), then a 600 mm breaker bar plus a 1.5 m length of pipe over the bar. You need to have recently run the engine to make sure there's enough vacuum for the servo.
I also undid one on a scrap 306 without wheels by putting two screwdrivers in the front disc vents and allowing them to lock against the calipers.

Hi,
You will struggle to undo it on the brakes, I know I couldn't get mine undone that way when I did my cambelt
.
The best way is with a impact wrench, air or electric but failing that I undid mine the jasper5 way
.
You will need a two foot / 60cm breakerbar I think from memory a 32mm socket & some ball's
.
The method is to jack up & remove the driverside front wheel make sure the car is secure on a axle stand, put the socket on the aux pulley bolt putting the breaker bar up tight to your bottom wishbone & atatch with a very big strong cable tie so the breaker bar can't move.
Next making sure the car is out of gear & get someone to help you with this bit!, sit down & press you foot hard on to the back of the breakerbar where it goes into the socket, so that you are pushing the socket on to the bolt head & push very hard ( you are going to use your foot to stop the socket jumping off the bolt head ).
Get your helper to turn the engine over using the starter, short bursts at a time ie 2-3 second jab's this will slowly wind the bolt out.
Don't worry if it make's some horrible screaching noises on the way out it's got thread lock on it, oh & I'd recomend fitting a new bolt ( but if you by a quality pulley kit it will come with one & thread lock already on it

It'll not harm the starter....but it might harm you if it all doesn't go to plan!

Another method is to put socket and bar on front pulley and rest it on the ground then crank the engine for a split second, may have to do it more than once.Yet another way is to heat the bolt to melt the locking compound on the threads.Iain

i've used the starter method on a few cars before, it sounds a bit dodgy but in practice it works great.
