2.0 HDI 110 poor starting hot and cold

I have a hunch what's wrong with the car - but need some second opinions.

Symptoms are:

Poor starting - hot or cold.
Sometimes when it fires up there's a big 'clunk'
MPG seems to have reduced a bit.

When running it 'seems' to run ok.

My thinking is a worn injector.

Any other thoughts?

You might want to ditch the free advertising :P

Why do you think it's a duff injector? Maybe 4...

This clunk, does it come from in front of you or behind? Could your lift pump be crapping out?

New battery, fuel filter?

you could do a leak off test to check the injectors , can you hear the lift pump in the tank running when you turn the ignition on , if not try giving it a tap to see it it fires up very common for them to start and fail.
otherwise i would say you need to have the codes read by someone with PP2000

What free advertising? Sorry don't see any advertising this end.

Car has had new battery, but doesntvstart first turn of key any more. Sometimes it struggles to start. Almost as if there's not enough diesel getting to the cylinder, which makes me think that there's a loss of pressure somewhere. I've a good local garage which I'll ask to have a look at it I think.

Really does sound like a lift pump issue - I'd check that out first, could save you some money.

When you set your key to 'ignition' you should here a humming sound from under the back seat, which will then stop after about 3 seconds, if it sounds like a jack hammer or really grumbles then it's knackered, it should sound sweet.

Eventually it will stop pumping diesel through altogether and can sometimes be shocked into life by thumping the underside of the fuel tank (seriously) - this then is a sure diagnosis of the fault.

(wiggy was referring to your 'tapatalk' automatic signature when you post, he doesn't like them).

Indeed, we're bombarded with advertising from cradle to the grave but some of them can be turned off...

I do seem to remember some saying there was a clunk from the lift pump when they're crapped out. Either that or it exploded

Thanks for the advice.

When switching ignition on there is a whirring motor noise which I think is louder recently, it deosnt' come from the engine bay so I'm assuming that is the pump.

If it is the pump that's wrong, what sort of a job is it to replace it? What sort of cost for a replacement?

Thanks a lot guys. I do appreciate your help.

Recently had lots of little things go wrong with the car and am very close to just getting rid.

Just checked again and it's definatellky making a very noticeable fast whirring noise. Sounds like an electric window motor.

Once the car is fired up it runs fine.

Am i right in thinking the in-tank pump is only used for starting up, and that after that the high-pressure pump at the engine end takes care of sucking up the diesel along the whole fuel line?

All help appreciated.

Thanks

Impster

After reading this post I think my pump could be failing. When I turn on the ignition I can hear the pump running for 6 seconds or so…quite a winey noise…but yesterday when I tried to start the car it wouldn’t start first time. Cranked for 5 seconds nothing…but heard a bleep sound ?..second time fired up as usual.

No. The lift pump runs for a few seconds to ensure you have fuel to start the engine.
Once the engine starts, the pump restarts and runs continuously, so long as you have oil pressure.

I have just replaced an injector and it seams to have resolved my slow to start when warm really slow cold. The clunk/misfire when first started and i have gained about 4-5mpg (now 31mpg around town  ) I would do a leak off test mate or check in pp2000
