Knocking sound on 406 1.9TD '98 "update"
Some while ago a noise started to appear while starting the engine of a 406 1.9TD engine. After starting a few times all seemed normal again and the car drove fine. Unfortunately this became routine...
Since recently the sound is hard to get rid of and I wonder if the above sounds familiar to one of you readers, (The sound of crankshaft bearings but on top of the engine).
I don't think it is any bearing related problem because once gone it's like there is nothing wrong. A bearing noise would be there all the time or noisier when warm.
I also checked each injector by releasing the inlet nuts but the sound did not disappear.
Could it be the timing of the injector pump? Can I fix that without high tech equipment?
Thanks in advance for any help...
I uploaded a small zip file with the sound of the engine as it sounds running stationary after starting.

Hi there
You might have to wait for the XUD wallas to appear but.. it strikes me that, once the engine is running, there is oil pressure. Also, I can't get the sound file to play but I'm not sure if it's broken or my pc just can't cope with the format

If you have vlc player I noticed you need to drag it into the player before it plays. I didn't get it to go by double clicking myself. It was original a .3gp file and I compressed it with .rar and I just renamed it to .zip as I could not upload .rar files...
The oil pressure light goes out immediately after starting. I changed the oil-filter two times as I already suspected a blocked "bypass" or something. I can't get very good filters here that I must admit but I have another Peugeot 406 running with it and has no problems.
A might be clue, it started a day after washing the engine. But to me I still don't know if it could be a cause or is more like a coincidence...
Thanks for your reply

Difficult to hear really - sounds like a normal diesel rattle (and 1.9TD XUDs are RATTLY!) when cold. This rattle generally disappears as it gets warm.
Can you take off your aux belt off and see if the noise goes away? Maybe you have a failing crankshaft pulley?

As stated they are a noisy engines especially from cold, get her up to temp and see if the noise is still there.
Poor plugs or air in the fuel system makes the noise even worse so I'd change plugs if its taking more than a few cranks to fire, if I waited for the light to go out mine started as soon as I turned the key after I fitted new plugs.
Also fuel filter and leak off pipes wont hurt and make sure the system is properly primed by cracking the union into the pump and giving the primer a squeeze until all the air is gone.
There's a good chance the cold start is sticking in the off position as most of them do, slacken the lock nut and give the bare cable some persuasion to try and unstick the actuator.
Also check the vac pipes aren't split, if you follow them from the cold start they connect to the big brake cylinder and disappear off behind the engine to the EGR.
My cold start died all together so I just turned the idle up a touch when it got chilly, alternatively feather the throttle for 30 seconds (1000 to 1000 RPM) and the lumpiness usually goes away.

Hello and thanks for the advice. The sound is definitely way louder than it should be but I will try to make a clearer sound example tomorrow.
Crankshaft pulley is ok. The sound does come from above and of five to ten times starting in the morning it starts one time without the excessive noise and it runs fine after.
Nobody thought of the timing of the injector pump. Is that because it's unlikely? Can I unscrew the three bolts and turn the injector pump a bit or will I end up with a car that will not run fine at all after?
I cannot figure out why it's sometimes there and sometimes not!
What is the way to adjust the timing? I have read this post:
http://www.auto-professionals.co.uk/sho ... p?tid=1234
but didn't understand the procedure. Could anybody shine a bright light on setting the timing of the injector pump?

Grab a video and upload it to youtube

Ok, I will try to figure out something. I am in a part of the World with the worst connections imaginable. If you think a few kB uploadspeed is slow, watch when it arrives to a few pB...
Anyway I will try the YouTube thing. I really need some useful advise on this car...

Maybe the following could give a clue. When the car is running at low speed and I hear the ticking noise clearly cutting the contact for an instance and getting it back on will make the sound completely disappear. Engine runs smooth as ever then! Whenever I cut the engine it starts all over though.
Anybody a clue?
Thanks in advance!
