Just wondering... how different are the 2.2L HDI engines you find in the 406 and the 407? One is DW12ATED4 and the other DW12BTED4... obviously the latter has two turbos with a different management system but I am guessing the block is the same and the other main bits are too? Are the parts interchangeable? Injectors, clutches, alternators...?
The main reason I am asking is that come next year, I will want to gut the engine of all the crap that it doesn't really need. That is, get rid of the DPF, EGR, air dosers and any ancillaries that go with it - basically what the 406 coupe boys do! The pictures of the ATED look a bit different, so I am not sure how similar the stuff is....

FWIW, the list includes:
Ecu
Turbos
HP pump
Rail press sensor
Injectors
In short the entire fuel and turbo systems. Yours runs 1800 bar vs mine's 1350 bar as std. You have piezo injectors, with up to 9 injections a cycle, compared to my 3.
The puzzling thing is how little extra power + torque they chose to get from it given the spec of the ancillaries. You could look at this as massive potential to increase the oomph.
It's torque, not power that breaks gearboxes, (except perhaps in the case of prolonged very high speed). I think you have a lot of safely exploitable potential there.

To be honest, I am a little underwhelmed by the power produced by the thing. It just seems far too "linear". I know the turbos are kicking in, 'cos I feel them but it's almost like I am waiting for some huge surge of power to come and it never does. Still rapid enough... but... meh..
I want to try and increase the power "naturally" (without a remap) by getting rid of crap it doesn't necessarily need. I am scared of doing a remap as the gearboxes are apparently only rated at 180bph - certainly don't want that to fall apart!

The turbo will spool a bit quicker without the dpf and egr but I think that will be it.
The ecu controls the boost level via a reading from the map sensor, and also controls how much diesel is added, if higher flow rated injectors are fitted the ecu will reduce the time they are open to try and stop over fueling.
I have to agree with the comment on torque breaking gearboxes not power, especially with the hdi's (torque killed my clutch as it would only slip around 2000-2300 rpm, didn't slip above 3000 rpm, even on a steep hill)

My interpretation is that the small turbo is so small that you don't notice a turbo kick (is it about 1300?), and the big turbo is big enough to be useful up to 4000rpm (that's where the corners are on the graphs).
The kick in the back at 1800rpm from the fixed geometry turbo on my HDi 90 was much more satisfying and fun.
Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
