406 V6 Estate, Auto V Manual

Post by TonyW »

Looking at two of these big boys as the wife is pregnant and she wants us to get an estate car. I'm in charge of changing my car so I'm going for a 406, big and fast! I've never driven an auto before so was wondering what the difference was and what type was in the 406? 4 or 5 Spped box with sports and/or winter modes?

And whats the diff to the car with the mpg and actually driving em, is the auto an easy drive or just too boring?

Cheers for the info, TW.

i would never buy an auto 406, the gearboxes are utter shite!
they last arround 60,000 miles and thats it, the fuel economy is terrible, you will eat front brakes and get bored senseless
go for a manual all day long 8)

My 406 V6 Auto Estate was both smooth and powerful (4 speed with winter and sport settings). It was wonderful in slow moving traffic. I had no problems with it and covered almost 110,000 miles before I sold it - but a few months after this the buyer said the gearbox had developed a problem and wasnt selecting any gears - so though I had no problems there may be probs associated with the auto!

Auto gearbox & brake life and fuel economy will depend on how you drive the car. The auto gearbox on my 406 V6 works perfectly after 80,000 miles and have had only one set of brake work done since the car was new.

I would like to know where the comment about Peugeot autoboxes lasting 60,000 miles comes from. Certainly if you read the 406 coupe forum at:
http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/
where there is a high proportion of autoboxes and V6's there is no suggestion of any common problem with the boxes.

MPG depends on how you drive and the nature of your run. I don't use my car for short runs from cold and most runs are in mixed or motorway traffic. Neverthless over a period of 80,000 miles in all sorts of traffic the mpg has rarely dropped below 30mpg per tankfull. This figure comes from the (accurate) trip computer and verified from mileage and fuel fillups. On most runs I get 32-34 mpg. Impressive for a heavy car with 3 litre 200+ hp engine and autobox.

The 3 litre engine in these cars is beautifully smooth, very quiet and with the autobox gives exceptionally smooth progress.
