Clutch on its way out???

Hi everyone, im having some intermittent issues with the clutch on my 1996 P plate 2.1 TD LX, or more to the point, clutch pedal.

The pedal itself always sat quite a bit lower than the brake pedal does, and if i hooked my foot under and lifted it back up, the pedal was very floppy until it reached that lower position again, like it wasnt connected to anything for the first half of pedal travel, the clutch biting point was also quite low down.

Then after a while of pulling the pedal up like i mentioned the travel began to get better and the pedal returned to near enough level with the brake on its own, and the biting point of the clutch was a bit higher up.

Now the pedal has reverted back to sitting half way down again, and the biting point is very low, lower than it ever was, and significantly worse when the engine is cold, it still engages the gears OK, but from a cold start i literally have to have my foot rammed to the floor, and i only have to release the pedal until its literally less than half an inch off the floor before we are off and going.

As said, it does improve once its warmed up and i would guess that it bites at just under an inch from the floor once up to temp.

Im informed that it will be a hydraulic clutch, and as i cant see a cable anywhere this must be the case, and im told that bleeding the clutch system may be a worthwhile thing to try, but on looking, i cant see where and how i would do that, theres nothing that jumps out to me that its the slave or master cylinder or whatever it is i need to bleed, all i can find is the usual brake servo, unless of course its a shared system?

Does anyone have any idea what my problem might be, and if a bleed would be worth a go, and how to go about it?

The cars done 210k and i only paid £250 for it with 11 months MOT so im not expecting the world, but as ive recently bought a caravan thats around 1250kg fully loaded im keen to keep my big diesel alive for as long as possible.

As long as it isn't actually slipping its probably down to the hydraulics. Although I have been running 2.1td XMs for the last 15 years or more I don't have any experience with the hydraulic clutch as mine have all been cable operated - and very heavy!

I think that the hydraulic system has to be changed as a complete unit, I'm sure someone who has one will be along shortly.

I think the clutch pedal may have a return spring which has broken or fallen off, that would account for your loss of movement if its not allowing the cylinder to return to the fully off position.

I have had the clutch on the XMs cover nearly 300,000 miles before it started slipping but it depends of course on the way its been driven.

Yeah, it's a sealed unit. Fairly easy to replace though.

Do check the spring as well.
