Hi, recently changed the big silencer and rear pipe of the exhaust and noticed that the cat is in need of a change before the (HUNGARIAN) MOT later this year. No problem except that the parts cost an arm and a leg here! I ordered the exhaust from the UK and saved about a third even with postage so I'm think I can get the CC from the same source but apparently I have to provide the car's registration number and of course, a Hungarian one isn't recognised! Anyone know anything about that and a way around it?
thanks in advance

UK suppliers are not allowed to supply non type-approved catalytic converters for cars registered after March 2001 to comply with EU rules. It should be possible to legitimately buy one for your car, the problem is convincing the supplier of the car's age.
Maybe someone can provide a UK registration number for a similar age 2.1 diesel?
If not, try phoning the UK supplier. If this is difficult for you, pm me the details and I will call them for you, if that helps.

Is this a possibility where you are?

Other than that, what Doggy said (again

), all it needs to be is a 2.1td saloon or estate, Service Box says there's only 1 cat - 1705J4.

No 2.1 TD was manufactured in 2001.
What about: R 153 KKO

I asked about that here when I had to have my cat replaced, they'd already tried replacing the cat on another 2.1td with just a straight tube but the car wouldn't run right. You'd have thought it would have been ok and probably still passed the easier emissions tests for older cars but maybe it needs the back pressure. Or something

Strangeness.

My 97 1.9 had a cat but the 96 didn't with no visible difference in the engines other than the 97 leaked fuel and oil, had no power and ran like a pile of pants and the 96 ran like new.

In the UK they only test diesels for smoke (currently

) and the CAT has no part to play in that. In Hungary they must test the quality of the emissions

as they others said there's no reason why you can't ring a UK supplier with any suitable UK reg and pretend that the car is over there with you (who cares?).
What makes you think you need a CAT anyway? is it loose/cracked?

Our mechanic said it's shot along with the rest of the system apart from the downpipe (he's trustworthy) - we've got one now from the UK, just waiting for it to be fitted.
cheers
