110HDi D9 Estate Reading engine codes (software and hardware

I keep getting the engine light come on, but when an auto electrician hooked his box of tricks up to it the only codes he got were to do with an overheating fault that i fixed some weeks ago with a new coolant temp sensor. He reset the light and the car was fine, it came on again yesterday and still it drives fine, then on the journey home from work it did not come on when I started the car, but after I stopped to get a lottery ticket the engine light came on again and the car is in limp mode as it does not want to rev. It had done this just before the auto electrician had looked at it, i.e. the night before but was fine the day he looked at it. I am beginning to suspect a lose of chaffed wire somewhere on one of the many bits of electronics under the bonnet.
However I don't want to keep paying out for getting it hooked up. Can anyone recommend hardware and software so i can use my laptop to diagnose the problem myself? The car is a 1999 on a V plate, so as far as i understand it won't be ODB11 I believe it would use the ISO protocol? Help please as although I understand electronics to a reasonable extent I don't know the best kit to get or even which kit to get.
