2.1 td, fuel filter question.

Post by clarkey1984 »

Hi guys, just a quick question.

I went and got a new fuel filter while i was in norwich yesterday as i have no idea when it was last changed, and after the lad at the motor factors took my reg number he said there was a choice of 2, and to go and look to see if my system was a bosch or a siemens one, he looked slightly perplexed when i went to check then came back and said that according to it being written everywhere that it is a lucas system (go figure) but he then gave me what he said was the correct one, but surprise surprise, i got home and it was the wrong one, the same diameter but nearly an inch shorter than mine.

So today i went down to the little independent car place near mine in beccles and got the right one, it all went in fine with no leaks and was the exact same height and diameter as the old unit, but when i threw the old one away i noticed that it was like a solid cylinder with a perforated top where you can see the filter itself is wound like a coil looking in from the top through the holes, whereas the new one has a solid top with one large hole in the middle and isnt encased in anything, theres just the flaps of the paper filter.

Is this just a difference in design and/or brand or have i got the incorrect filter, as i say it fits fine and doesnt leak, and the car seems much more responsive with the new one, i just want to ensure ive not got the wrong part in there, i have added 2 pictures to show what i mean as im not the best at explaining it, the all black filter is how the old one was and the yellow and silver one is what the new one is like.

I would think it just a different design, the fuel goes in and out at the top and bottom so whether the actual filter medium is exposed doesn't really matter. I have run 2.1s in XMs for many years but I don't recognise either of those filters so if it works I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm glad you said that, I don't recognise them from my days of filter changes on my 2.1 D8 :? I thought maybe my memory had further deteriorated :(

So it came up on their system as an HDi, neat  Don't bother going there again :frown:
