2.2 Bottom engine mount

Busy weekend planned fitting new front ARB bushes, new rear discs and handbrake cable and a mini service.
If time allows I may finally get round to changing the stupid poly bush bottom mount the previous owner fitted for the proper one I picked up from the stealers 2 months ago.
My question is can any of you kind 2.2 owners out there post a pic of the correct orientation for the mount as I don't have the original to copy.

Thanks in advance

Gareth

I can't help with your request but can I ask if you're replacing the stupid poly bush because of vibration through the car?

You are spot on Welly, I'm 99% sure it's also responsible for most of the annoying cabin rattles as well! At the very least it's the constant vibration at low revs that has shaken stuff loose over time.
I will admit there is virtually no engine movement no matter how hard you rev the thing but it just ain't worth it unless you're a boy racer or you like track days. It may or may not improve throttle response but I won't know until I fit the OE one.

I went through the same choice changing the lower mount on my Volvo just about everyone was shouting "don't fit poly" due to vibrations (especially at idle with the a/c on) so I went for OEM as it was nice and squidgy but held the engine just fine.

Can't find a useful picture of the thing at the moment Gareth, but it's easy to work out by looking at the mount and using some common sense.

It's very stiff in one axis and less so in the other. The less stiff axis has more gaps in the rubber inside the bush. This less stiff axis should be oriented along the front-back line of the vehicle (so the stiffer axis is oriented along the vertical line).

This is obvious if you think about it - if you start the engine you can see that the engine rocks forwards and backwards (it's rotating around an axis parallel with the crankshaft). So the forward-back axis is the one that needs damping from the rubber in the bush.

Hope that's clear!

Thanks Jon but from what I remember when I picked it up the centre hole appeared to be slightly off-set but as I through it in the car bits box and haven't looked at it since that could be totally waffle. I'll drag it out later and hide it in the freezer somewhere the Mrs won't spot it :supafrisk:

Probably unrelated but mine instantly developed low rev cabin vibration when I had a cheap after market exhaust flexi fitted.

Can't help you immediately either, but from personal experience I can confirm it's really worth the effort to get it spot on.

(but I guess you know that already).

Thank you gents as always
With the drivers door open you can visibly see the amount of vibration so I'll position the solid rubber bits vertically and try tapping it round with a punch while the engine is running for fine tuning if that makes sense?

I suspect that once the bush is pressed in, you're never going to turn it.

Just done mine on a hdi90 think it might be slightly in the wrong way as there is a lot of vibration. I think the red line is the way its supposed to be

Here's mine after my mechanic fitted it, it was perfect like this:

Thanks Welly, that's confirmed what I was thinking, presumably Hasler you're getting vibration due to the more solid part of the mount not allowing enough damping and it needs to turn through 90 degrees.
All you're responses are much appreciated Gentlemen

Hmm might live with it for a bit and get the proper one from dealer later, the center bit is different on the new one
