Have the Haynes manual for this job and it looks fairly involved. Anyone got some hints and kinks to make it easier?

That's all we need to know. The Haynes book is a pretty good guide but I admit it does look complicated, it's largely a matter of remembering where all the bits go when you come to put it back together, take photo's of each stage of dismantling. Have a look on YouTube and you will probably find a video that shows it being done, you can pause it to get a better look. Use a laminated steel gasket rather than a copper one, they are much more durable, it may be that is the only one available now.

Above all - don't panic.

Thanks Peter. More or less what Haynes recommend.

Don't forget to replace your cam belt kit and water pump whilst you have it stripped.

I can't remember if the head bolts need replacing or not, but you should check.
