Hi All
Overheated the engine today (left running and fans did not kick in). Engine got very hot. Dumped all the water. Hose from thermostat housing at back of engine has burst. Not the large one to the bottom of the rad but one about 20mm diameter internal. The hose ripped all the way round by the retaining clip. I cannot find what his connects to. Does not appear to be another piece with a ripped end. Been searching fir a coolant diagram but none found . Any ideas. I want to replace the hose and see if the engine is damaged.
Many thanks
Bob

Hi aad welcome aboard.
Sorry to hear about your problem - never seen a 2.1 close up, so can't help much personally. Someone useful ought to be along soon.

Re: 2.1td 12v thermostat connections
Hi Steve,
Many thanks looks like it is the plug 13/83 on the diagram. That would explain why there is no pipe to connect to. Now to find a piece of suitable hose and a bung, and then if the engine is properly cooked or not.

Many thanks for the help. Car back together. Improvised a bung with a piece of hose and a plastic wine cork. Amazingly the engine seems OK. Changed the oil as clearly the stuff had got well over temperature. The whole engine bay smells of serious overheating. Finger crossed its good for another 150Kmiles.

Splendid
Is it any noisier than it was? I remember when a mate of mine cooked his Mini, it rattled like a bag of bones after.

Re: 2.1td 12v thermostat connections
The 2.1 engine had a redesigned cooling system after some of the catastrophic failures of the 1.9 and a very good job they made of it, the thermostat being in the return means that you don't get any air trapped in the head, it also means that its not very easy to get at, although they generally fail open so are not the usual cause of boiling.
I boiled my XM several times because the fans didn't work in a traffic jam but the head survived, very rarely do you hear of one failing - but don't push your luck.
