not 406 related..

Post by lozz »

Hi all ..
Looking for ideas on this..

My car had a split in the cat /mani-cat..

I've temp sealed it..
All good and no longer blowing..
But now there's a loss in power..its totally gutless..
The engine management light isn't on,.

Do you think 'cat' is collapsed/choked ..
The car is a 207.
Someone mentioned if the cat's fail on these it blows an hole in the exhaust..
I wonder if this is why the cat it self as split..at the welds..

Sounds plausible.

Stick your hand over the end and see if there is any pressure?

I would be undoing the exhaust first from behind the cat and see if this improves performance. If it doesn't improve then you can suspect the cat.

I've had several cases of blocked rear silencers on 307s over the years....amongst other makes of car.
Middle boxes get blocked too...don't know if your car has a middle box.

Thanks.

The middle section of the exhaust is rusty.
I've replaced the back box the other day..the box it self was good but the bracket on it had rusted and snapped off.

Tonight I've put two bottles of 'cat a clean in..and took it up the hills
After 30 miles or so it seems to have a bit more power.. mpg as gone up a bit too from 26 mpg to 36 -38 I sh
For a small car that is supposed to have 95 horses it still feels like most of them must be asthmatic..

But I'm not sure or not if these 1.4 s are normally underpowered or not
I've only driven a diesel 208 before.. so it might be me. Expecting to much from it..

Now I'm a bit more 'miffed off.

I've just been on the 'gov site and pulled up the cars mot info..
On the previous/expired mot the car failed on..

Exhaust back box insecure.. this will be the support bracket that I found rotted and fell off.
Exhaust emissions failed on idle. 7.3.d.4
Exhaust emissions failed on fast idle/excessive.. 7.3 .d.3

That was over 12mths ago.. robins and day Glasgow..

Recent mot the. Dealer had done when I bought it.. ATS euro master Manchester..
The car failed on the same things plus front brakes and handbrake plus springs..

I wonder how they've got round the emissions ..the original cat is still on.. :?

They kept that quiet..they said the car got a straight pass no problems with it..
A trustworthy. Dealer it seems not.. :frown:

Might not be so sinister lozz...
If the fail was only just a fail last time, taking into account it was tested on another machine a year later, the second machine may be calibrated slightly differently and it just passed.

However, I'm a born cynic, so I think your original assumption is probably correct......

+1, maybe a good run could make the difference.
Bear in mind it would have been drawing in fragrant Glasgow air, tinged with main dealer bullsh1t the first time.

Thanks..

Hopefully a different cat will sort it..
I had another run out in it today. And noticed a strong eggy smell.so I think the cat is deffinatly finished
Only strange thing is there's never been any sign of the engine management light coming on..

Setting off from traffic lights/junctions etc the car is a slug
There's no power in it.. get up to say 30mph ..and it drives like a new car..

The cat and the middle section of the exhaust have turned to weird colour...they look like theyve just come off top of a bonfire
Last time I seen out like this was on a Nissan Micra ..but the cat on that glow'd red..

I think I will leave it off the road for a bit ..

Weirdly the car seems to have repaired its self.
But now there's a new fault..
When going up hill or down hill the temp gauge drops..

Not sure if its a temp sensor or thermostat issue.
There's no loss of coolant or overheating or loss of heat from heater..

The car as now got full power other than that.. :?

*problem solved.
some wires for the temp sensor was chaffed.
it seems someones had this engine in bits recently..on some of the loom theres very little armour/casing..
wiring isvery thin on this thing..so iwill see if ican buy some casing/armour for the loom ..what ever its called.dunno.

next job oil leak from sump ..grrrr. its never ending with this thing.
if ipark the car in the garage /up slope it leaks oil..point it down hill ..no oil leaks.. it dont help having a garage on land that is sinking..but still it shoudnt leak anyhow..

ishouid send it back to the garage that sold it me.. on fire.. the bastids. :(

next year ithink iwill chop it in somewhere..and get something thats less hastle.. a 407 perhaps.
