Airconditioning Woes

Yesterday I was driving V6 and my windows misted up, so I put the aircon on and there there was no cold air coming out. Since I have owned my car I have never checked the aircon system. Luckily its winter so there is no need for aircon but I took it to a specialist today and was told my condenser coil needed replacing, he said he would replace the whole condenser. Is it possible to replace just the coil?

The condenser is usually a radiator in front of the main cooling one, as far as I know they are all in one piece - unless this is another new piece of technology that's passed me by.

It is just one 'radiator' unit. They're not badly priced and can be fitted DIY-style. There's a How-To on here somewhere, I think the 406 condenser has an in-built drier unit too.

My only advise would be NOT to buy the cheapest one you can find (got the T-Shirt) as they won't last long. Try and stick with decent named makes; although I have found the automotive a/c industry quite secretive when it comes to who makes what.

Always purchase the O-rings you need from the main dealers.

It's advisable to replace the filter/dryer at the same time since you're opening up the system. The drier contains desiccant that will be saturated with moisture rather quickly when exposed to the air. You'll need to have the system pumped down after you've reassembled the system after which it can be filled with refrigerant.

Took it to my local aircon specialists and they said they would fill it up with a mixture of gas and a dye to see if there was a leak. Sure enough I had not even made it home it started to leak. Huge stone lodged itself inside the condenser and they would have to replace it at the cost of a small fortune. Is there any way to patch it up?

Not really effectively but you could get a secondhand one from the breakers or ebay, or a new one for £48.
