clutch change time

Post by john170277 »

car is needing a new clutch in the near future so I have gone round getting prices they vary from£450-877 but so do the clutches most of the garages wont do me a solid flywheel conversion saying that they are a waste of time
now is that just to get more money from me or is best to stick with what they came from the factory with the lower price is for a solid flywheel with concentric cylinder and bearing included

There are many different opinions regarding which is better - the dual mass or the single mass.

The single mass is generally a bit stronger, and may be an option if you have 'much' more BHP than standard - otherwise the dual mass is the best bet as it is plenty strong enough for an uprated BHP and its design smooths the engine revs so the vibrations in the cabin are greatly reduced.

When I need to do mine, I will stick with a dual mass even though I have more BHP than standard, as some members have regretted getting the single mass due to the excess vibrations.

Unless you are a street racer, stick with the dual mass.. 8)

Keep shopping around for prices, but for the 406 its about £150 for the clutch and £250 for the DMF if you are lucky - then labour on top ( estimated 5-6 hours..)

The purpose of the flywheel is to protect the gearbox from the pulsing of the four power strokes per revolution of the engine. (Engines with more cylinders have smaller flywheels because they have more power strokes per revolution and are therefore smoother.)

Whenever I've asked a mechanic about my 407 (180hp, 390Nm) -- including resident genius Jasper 5 -- the answer has always been, without hesitation, to stick with dual mass.

Like GM says, with the 406 2.2 HDi (136hp, 315Nm) most people seem to be sticking with dual mass, with only owners who are particularly keen on modifications using solid -- sometimes with a paddle clutch. When remapped (like GM's) they can keep up with if not see off my 407.

However, for the 406 HDi 110 the consensus seems to be that solid conversion is fine. I believe in this case there's a cheap solid kit. (For my 407 the solid kit costs the same as the dual mass!)

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I have not had a problem with dual mass flywheels or clutches, my 406 has done 233,000 miles and as far as I know still has the originals. I was told the clutch was worn when I bought it at it bites right at the top, I have come to the conclusion that most of them do, I have done about 45,000 miles in it and it hasn't got any worse. I also have a C5 at 200k which is also original, I think its got a lot to do with how they are driven and I'm a plodder.

Mondeo clutches are a pain to replace so expect a higher than normal price.

Always replace the concentric slave cylinder and dual mass flywheel if it had one fitted as standard.
