Oil and service intervals

Hi all,

Having had a squiz at the Peugeot owner's manual, it says something about the correct type and grade of oil being essential to the smooth running of the engine given the extended service intervals. I know that's true to a greater or lesser extent for all cars, but the handbook seems to make a big thing about it being really important in the 406's case.

My questions are:

a) what oil do people use
b) are Peugeot exaggerating?

According to the service book, the oil hasn't been changed for nearly 3 years :shock: so needs doing PDQ I reckon.

For my 2.0. Hdi I use Comma semi synthetic oil about £13.00 for 5 litres and change it every 8,000 miles, probably more often would be better, I used to change the XUD oil at 5,000 miles but the Hdi is a cleaner burning engine. The 8 valve engine doesn't have a DPF so doesn't need special oil. I used the same oil in the XUD's.

Frequent oil oil changes are far more important than using expensive oil as this keeps the engine clean and should prevent the formation of sludge. I have used cheap oil and regular oil changes for the 30 years I have run Citroen/Peugeot diesels and have never had an engine failure, some of my cars had done around 300,000 miles.

Same here, more or less. Make sure you do it at least once a year, regardless of mileage.
I do 20k+ a year, mostly main roads / motorways and try to change the oil in HDi's at 10k intervals - they get a bit 'tappety' beyond that, in my experience.
Ran my 8v HDi90 on semi synth, but I treat remapped 2.2's to 0W40 or 5W40 fully synthetic, but shop around cos I'm a skinflint. :oops:
Oil + filter usually doesn't cost > £25
