i had a similar problem on a car at work, it logged an intermittent tdc sensor fault, and wouldnt start untill you fiddled with the battery, the car had done 270,000 miles as well although this doesnt apply to you
what it turned out to be in the end was:
the starter motor was drawing so much current due to its age and the positive starter cable being so old, that the starter was drawing the pulse signal from the tdc sensor though the wiring loom, so i re-routed the starter live cable, which of course went straight to the battery, and hey presto it started, though i didnt leave it at that, just to be sure i put a tdc sensor, starter motor and starter cable to be sure, so i would get the fault codes read first, if you have a tdc sensor fault then try unbolting the starter motor cable and re-route it more arround the front of the engine bay
