Sorry if been asked before.
2.0 110 HDi High pressure pump.
Is there a way to fit this without removal of cambelt or can the belt be 'slackened' to allow fitting this. - Or if you have done one, is there a knack as such.
Cheers
J

I had to remove the cambelt to change mine on a C5, can't see any other way of doing it. After I changed it I found the fault was with the pressure regulator on the back of the pump.

Thx Peter, - I fear I'm entering the woeful world of HDi starting issues.
Not a single problem at all, then just failed to start a month ago. - Mechanics who I trust, have tried multiple checks and test and have traced it to the HP pump. - Cars done over 250k so quite possibly. I'm aware it can be, oh about 10 other 'things' that can throw same fault.
Book time gives 6 hours to change it, means fafing with cambelt so was wondering if there was a 'way around' to reduce the fitting time as such.
I'll get them to check the regulator over too.
Thx

I would check the regulator first. One of the problems I was having was difficulty starting when hot, on old fashioned IDI pumps that could be because the pump was worn, it was a typical BMW problem, or at least the BMW engine in the Vauxhall Omega suffered this problem. That's why I changed the pump.
It was OK when I first did it then it started going into limp home mode and the light coming on, so I swapped the regulator for the one on the old pump, and guess what, it wouldn't start when it was hot.

So the problem was with the regulator, the pump was OK.
The regulator has a filter in it, looks like a stainless steel tube, you can see it when you take it off, it gets blocked but the holes are so small you can't see them so have had no success trying to unblock it. One of the several regulators I have didn't have a filter so I removed it from the one on the car - had no trouble at all since then.
If you can't get it sorted I would take it to a diesel specialist, they usually know what they are doing.

Thx Peter,
Interesting is, the car has had absolute no problems, in performance, fuel economy, etc.
Simply one saturday took it out in the morning for a 40min journey, came home no problem.
Went to start it 4 hours later and simply nothing, turning over fine just not catching
I'll pull of the regulator first, - I have another HP pump so will use it off that first.
Thx
J

Are you absolutley sure it's not the lift pump?

Lift pump has been checked, it's coming through but stopping at HP pump.
Was hoping something easy like the regulator. - Appears not
Oh well in any case the cambelt condition can be checked at the same time
The old girls done around 260k miles so guess the pumps a bit worn.

Hi Waxman and All The fuel pump can be changed without disturbing the belt set up. Mine had only been changed 2000 miles before we changed the HP pump. I helped my mate with it, the top covers removed, middle cover bolts removed as much as could, fuel pipes to pump removed and elect connections. Bolts securing the pump removed and the nut holding the pulley to the pump shaft slackened. Now you need 2 sets of hands the pulley was kept tight to the belt while the nut was removed and the pulley levered off the shaft and pump swapped with replacement, keeping belt in place and tight at all times, as the pumps are not timed the pulley went straight on and rebuilt as reverse. Hope this will help any one else in future. Regards

The lift pump is probably working OK but the metal filings indicate that its breaking up.

Well after fitting the HP pump I decided to get the guys to complete the loop by fitting a new lift pump, clearing out the system lines and fitting new fuel filter.
Now she's back on the road driving as if nothing happened. Sorted. - Thx for all your advice guys.
Sooper Dooper, here's to another 250k miles
