Removing the EGR system altogether - few questions!

Post by fattail95 »

Hey guys,

I've had my EGR blanked off at the intake manifold end for around a year now with no issues, but now the EGR valve itself has failed and is spilling exhaust gas into the engine bay which is no good. I'm going to remove the EGR system altogether (including the heat exhanger) as well as all the pipework and seal each end up with a heavy duty blanking plate.

Once I've removed the heat exchanger I will need to join the two water pipes, but does anyone know the ID for these pipes? I got the digital calipers out and measured at ~30mm but thats OD and I don't know the rubbers thichness. And question two, what type of joiner should I use to bridge the hoses?

I don't have a 110 so can't say for certain, but your best bet is probably to get an equivalent hose from a car that doesn't have the heat exchanger.
(2.2's had a similar heat exchanger from launch until late 2002, but the later car's didn't - it may well be the same for your car).

Found the necessary replacement hose on eBay yesterday, so that's been ordered :cheesy: I've also just finished simplifying my vacuum system from 3 EV's down to just 1 :) feels more responisive now and looks far cleaner. Now I can remove the EGR system altogether which will make it tidier still and give me far more room down the back of the engine 8) I'll post up some pics when its done as it may be of some use to others.

Found a more detailed breakdown of the hoses on ServiceBox, the bypass hose needed is 6464 WY. These hoses were fitted as standard to the EEC 95 DEPOLL engine which had no heat exchanger, whereas the EEC 2000 DEPOLL engine had heat exhchangers as standard.

Just out of interest, will it pass a UK mot with the EGR removed completely? From what I remember my MOT tester didn't spend much time poking around under the bonnet, assuming he was checking important things like brakes and the like :)

I assume if it passes emissions without an engine check light It's good to go? Might leave the leaky old piece of ballast in just to be sure...

Just fit thin plates at each end and no-one is non the wiser - all my 406s have passed MOT, both with the EGR gone but the pipe work in place :supafrisk:

I did speak to an MOT tester about this and he told me that as long as it still passed emmissions it was fine. On the DW10 the EGR is fairly well hidden down the back of the engine so it won't shout at you at all, especially considering I'm replacing it with an OEM pipe which will hide most of it, as per the diagram below. The only way you could really see the modification is if the engine cover was removed (will be hard with my strut brace and convenient* Peugeot clips, so I doubt he'd bother). 8)

I know I could just blank under the EGR but I just want to remove the lot, more space can only be a good thing! :D

I agree there's no issue with the MOT, it just has to pass the smoke test, (which any HDi seems to sail through).

I went for the unmodified look just in case testers become anal about it at some point, (but I suspect you could literally drive a bus through this one). :supafrisk:
