Hey all,
My alternator has gone south on my D8 V6 saloon, how easy is it to change?

Or is it a absolute bitch of a item to change?

See howto here for belt removal: http://406oc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8145

That bit's easy. The alternator's sandwiched between the AC pump and PAS pump though, so it might be difficult to get it unbolted without the right deep sockets, and might actually be impossible to remove with the radistors and/or AC pump in place. I recommend taking the belt off and having a look for yourself. Don't forget the wiring :)

Good luck.

Cheers Mate,
Oh that sounds like fun, not!

What you mean by don't forget the wiring?
Did change a alternator on a bike recently and it turned out to be the wiring between the alternator and the reg/rec.

I think Matt means don't forget to disconnect it, but I would certainly recommend proving the output voltage is low/not there at the alternator before you think about taking it off.
I've just fixed the alternator an my daughter's 807 and I can't believe any 406 can be that bad - it needed the wheel arch liner, aux drive belt, tensioner and idler rollers, windscreen washer bottle and a brace between the inner wing and subframe removed, plus the a/c compressor off and power steering pump moved before it could be wriggled out via the wheel arch.

Ive tested at the battery with the car running at idle 12.5v and with the revs elevated and still 12.5v.
I'm assuming the alternators are instant charge unlike most motorcycles that don't charge until 4-5500 rpm.

Oh sounds like fun!

I think it's worth checking you still have only 12.5V at the alternator - a good alternator a bad connection somewhere could give you 12.5V at the battery.

and yes, it should give you 14V or thereabouts at idle, unless absolutely everything's turned on.

Cheers Doggy.
Going to get it recovered today as been at my girlfriends all week with a chest infection.
Get it back to mine where I have all the tools and I can have a look and see If I can get on the actual output terminal and test from there.
