v6 clutch problems

Hey everybody.
Super nice forums.
Hope you can help me. I recently bought an old 406 v6. Up untill now i am vrey impressed with it, but now an issue has arised. Yesterday the clutch began making sounds as if the the clutch pedal wasn't pressed all the way to the bottom. Today disaster struck, I turned on the car, clutch to the floor, when suddenly it acted as though i had released the clutch, along with a popping sound. Now the clutch doesn't work, the pedal is very loose on the top half, while it cannot be pushed more than halfway down.
I read a bit on your forums, and tried using your guides to remove the slave cylinder. I took some photos along the way, so maybe some of you tekkies can see what is wrong.
The bit inside the gearbox (where the slave cylinder presses) is about 8-9 centimeters in. I cannot press it but can pull it a couple of millimeters.
When i turn on the car and try to press the clutch pedal it "growls".
Hope someone can help me :?

No slipping. Drove like a charm. Only thing, yesterday it started sounding as if the clutch was not fully activated when the pedal was pressed down. The car is a mk1 by the way.
