Starting Problems

My 2001 2.0 diesel has developed starting problems in the morning. it needs several turns on the starter motor before I get a chug and then on the next attempt it starts. Then it starts normal on the first turn for the rest of the day, except if I leave it for several hours before restarting.
I have had it in the garage and the glo plugs are ok and should be as they have only recently been renewed. He says the fuel is ok. I have put a new battery on it as the old one struggled in the morning.
Any help would be very welcome
Cheers Jonti

A dodgy fuel pressure regulator on the high pressure pump will give these symptoms. Often removing it and cleaning it will eradicate the problem, but good second hand ones are cheap on the bay too.

Here is the Peugeot ServiceBox document for removal/replacement, should be of some help.

If yours is a Siemens fuel system equipped HDi 90, you probably have very minor leak on your fuel filter - not enough to let diesel out, but enough to let a tiny amount of air in and allow the fuel to drain back to the tank over a lengthy stop. If it's this the priming bulb will go soft over time / pumping it up should let it start first time.

Thanks for the replies,I think they will be very useful. As the weather is very cold at the moment I will wait for a while before I lift the bonnet.
Thanks again for the help
