hdi cold start issues
hi folks first the facts
2002 hdi 90bhp 75k on clock
cold starting issues ,ie takes a couple of turns then lumpy for min or two with blue smoke
injectors all good
diagnostic shows no faults
once warm will start first time every time no smoke.
when cold once started, loud rattle from drivers side engine bay when driving
all these issues only happened after using some egr cleaner only used this because felt a bit sluggish
mechanic reckons its the high pressure fuel pump conneted to the timing belt .
would love to hear your thoughts cheers in advance.

Re: hdi cold start issues
I had this a couple of winters ago.
The car would start OK.
Then after a few hundred yards, the engine note would change, the rattle appeared, throttle response seemed to become
highly sensitive and jerky, and smoke.
When I stopped the car after a few more hundred yards of this. Left it a few minutes. Re-started, and it would be fine.
In the end, I think I either cleaned up the MAF with MAF cleaner, or bought a second-user original manufacturer MAF on eBay.
( Sorry for vagueness. I definitely replaced the MAF, but can't recall at what point)
Reading around seems to say not to use EGR cleaner to clean the MAF.
Perhaps if you cleaned your MAF with MAF cleaner..?
The car would start OK.

Re: hdi cold start issues
I doubt that its the HP pump or it probably wouldn't start at all, could be the pressure regulator on the HP pump though, I have had problems with them.
If we could hear the rattle it might help, can you post a video?

Re: hdi cold start issues
The sound I experienced was like a high-pitched, intrusive version of 'diesel rattle'. i.e detonation.

Re: hdi cold start issues
Like running on EGR cleaner? They do tend to make a high frequency diesel rattle if revved when cold but the symptoms sound like low compression on one or more cylinders but that's unlikely to happen suddenly. If it goes OK once warmed up I would be inclined to leave it alone unless additional symptoms appear.

Re: hdi cold start issues
hi thanks for your thoughts,
i am pretty sure its not the injectors as when removing plug to one of them it did run lumpy but without removal and testing cant be 100 percent although have done a leak test and all good.
i did try to measure ohms on coils to injectors but all 4 said open circuit ,can anyone tell me what i might be doing wrong there.

Re: hdi cold start issues
What was the results of the leak off test?.
You seem to be lost here..
Fuel filter housing.
Maf
Injectors.
Did you try blanking the egr?.
Unplugging the MAF.
And see if there's any improvement there..?
Obviously unplugging the MAF wouid or may bring up the EML.

Re: hdi cold start issues
mechanic informed me leak test was all good .
maybe a bit lost but since using egr cleaner ,giving me symptoms pointing to fuel line/maf/injector
before using cleaner no issues at all ,making me regret ever seeing spray on offer
have noticed a lot of blue smoke on startup and if i put hand over air intake in airbox blue smoke starts to get chucked out

Re: hdi cold start issues
Tbh. I'd blank the egr.
Its only acase of cutting a peice of tin..or £2 or so for a blank plate.
Maybe that egr cleaner has loosend aload of crud..and the egr is sticking.

When you sprayed the EGR cleaner in, did you just spray into the airbox, and therefore it went throughsnipes1 wrote:mechanic informed me leak test was all good .

the MAF ?
Or did you remove the inlet pipe from the exit-side of the MAF, and spray into the pipe, and bypassing the MAF ?
There's various online stuff about not spraying EGR cleaner into a MAF. Unsure how verifiable it is.

In that case, I'd buy some MAF Cleaner, remove the MAF, and give it a good spray through.snipes1 wrote:hi i did spray through maf
Don't rub or touch the filament.
Before re-fitting the MAF, make a note of the part number, it should be, I think..
a Siemens 9629471080.
If car improves, all well and good.
If not, then...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-406-2 ... SwB4NWwzvP
That's a second hand genuine Siemens part. The expensive end of the MAF's for sale are new genuine ones.
The £35 - £40 new ones are Chinese copies, that receive few recommendations on here.
Bearing in mind when the problem started, and how you used the EGR cleaner, that's the best I can offer,
Anyone else..?
