Foggy windscreen!

Post by SwedishLinus »

Hi all!
My 406 2.0 16v Gasoline has a problem with fog on the inside of the windshield. The weird part is that its only on the drivers side (this is a LHD car). I suspect that something in the cooling system is leaking. I have to fill up the coolant every 1000km with maybe 200ml! Help me out here guys, its pretty annoying with the foggyness when driving at night. And yes, it does occur with both A/C turned off and on!

Missing coolant, screen misting up, sadly I reckon that's the matrix or one of the seals. The connections are on your driver's side. Could you try putting a sealant in the cooling system? 200ml isn't much so you might be lucky, but even if it doesn't last long it might clarify the situation.

What you want to do is drain some coolant out of the system, 1 litre should do it.
Just enough so that the sealant enter's the main cooling system.
Pour in the sealant in though the header tank then top the header tank back up with coolant, then run the engine with the heater settings on hot.
Run the engine up so that the main cooling fan kick's in, do this for 3 or 4 fan cycle's then switch off & allow the engine to cool, check the coolant level in the header tank & top up if necessary.
Now take the car for a good run getting the car up to full running temperature for 1/2 hour or so .
Hopefully this will work, but I''m not making any promises, the best way is to replace the o-rings / matrix.
Best of luck DDD.

You will need to blead the system as you fill it as normal, if memory serves me right there's 3 blead screws.
If you just disconnect the bottom hose from the header tank, lower it down the side of the engine block to allow
some coolant to escape, then reconnect.
Add the sealant & then the remaining coolant, you can get away without having to blead the system.

Thanks! Getting by without the bleeding procedure would be so nice!
