Hi all,

On my 2.0 HDI 110, there is a small pipe (maybe 2mm internal diameter) that is coming from some sort of reservoir/pump at the front of the engine (i'm not very technical). It seems to dangle down and not attach to anything - is this some kind of drain or overflow pipe? Will take a piccie tomorrow which might help...

I am pretty sure it's the coolant drain pipe. I have it on mine as well. Just in case you overfill the reservoir

Have to agree with Captain Jack. Not a lot else it can be really? Air con?

I always wondered why things didn't explode after i'd over-filled the coolant without any means of draining some out... ;)

I wouldn't have imagined it could be aircon - they're sealed circuits containing some very high pressures and potentially explosive gasses i think

Or could it be the pipe at the bottom of the fuel filter, to drain water from the filter.

Well I think air con works to the same principle as a fridge and the condensation on a fridge goes out a channel on the back and is evaporated using the heat of the compressor. So in theory this should also happen in a car so liquid must be released somewhere? Its the gasses that are sealed, as these are poisonous and can damage the atmosphere.

The air con drain pipe discharges it's water over the CAT on the HDi

The pipe you describe sounds like the overflow from the expansion bottle. It is a pressurised bottle and the airspace above the water line becomes pressurised which weeps out of (and back in) the sealed cap.

The drain pipe will discharge water if the water line is too high in the bottle, to save squirting it over the ECU/engine, or you!
