Can't find the stepper motor on a 1.9 td 97 saloon. I'm used to it being an idle speed control valve!
I've been told it's a 4 cable plug and it's somewhere near the fuel pump but the only plugs I can find are 2 cable ones I'm pulling my hair out, it's not even in the haynes manual I have!
Please someone put me out my misery!

I didn't think diesels had idle control valves, isn't it all done with fuel volumes? [/only does lawnmowers]

No idle stepper on diesel cars, they don't have a throttle.
This is precisely the (main) reason for better diesel fuel economy - lack of throttling losses.

Well I'm glad I'm not going mad then not being able to find one! In that case what would likely be the cause of my revs bouncing when I first start the car and sometimes when I pull up at lights etc? It also it's at 1000rpm at idle which as far as I'm aware is higher than it should be!
Thanks for the clarification guys!

Most likely culprits are fuel filter, clogged in-tank strainer or a very minor fuel pipe leak, (they can let in air without leaking diesel).
