Hdi 90 Gear Linkage Rods or Cables?

Post by tonyredz »

Hello, having a similar problem to a previous post back in 2010: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10669&start=0
My gear lever is just flapping from side to side & I can only select 1st gear. Thinking this is also a linkage problem.
Just wondering if anyone could confirm any of the following:
Does the Hdi 90 HP have gear linkage rods or cables?
Is the correct engine code for the Hdi 90hp version – DW10TD and correct transmission code: BE4/5.
I have the Haynes manual for the 406 which only covers models from 1999 to 2002. The manual states: There is ‘a selector rod mechanism on BE3/5 transmission and a selector cable on the BE4/5 and ML5T units’
I just noticed that on the previous post back in 2010 Steve_Earwig states:
^On the HDi 110 (ML5T) it is cables but on the HDi 90 (BE4R) it's rods. Or rather 1 rod, with lots of little linkages which'll have plenty of scope for wearing out and/or falling off".
Seems to be at odds with the Haynes manual? if the Hdi 90 is BE4/5 transmission ???
Also would anyone consider using parts from a scrapped car for this type of issue, or better to go with new parts only for this?
Could it be anything else causing a loose gear lever?

Thanks in advance for any replies, much appreciated.

Hi there. I just pulled the diagrams up for a couple of HDi 90's (early and late) and they're both rods.

Haynes is also know as "the book of lies".

It really depends how much is broke, how good you can get and how much you want to chuck at the problem. How long is a piece of string?

Hi Steve,
thanks for your reply & for the diagrams, much appreciated. Have located the gear linkages & one has come away from the ball joint. I see there is a gear linkage kit available on ebay which has all three gear linkages. Is it advisable to replace all three linkages so you would then have the same amount of wear on all? Or if I just replace the one short link causing the problem, I'm then left with one new part and two old ones. Any advice. Thanks.

I couldn't tell you for sure as I've never had to replace gearchanges (on a manual) but if you change them all you should get a nice tight gearchange. Whether you should do it or not probably depends on how worn the old ones are/the quality of the replacements/how much of a bastard they are to change/how enthusiastic you're feeling
