Engine starts then refuses to re-start

Hello,
I have read a lot of forums but not come across the problem that i have so here goes.

My cambelt broke on my car and thus breaking cam followers as i'm told is normal for a 8 valve engine so cam belt kit fitted and followers replaced but not all broken bits found so i took the cylinder head off found no bits but while the head was off i cleaned it up and ground the valves and replaced valve stem seals etc, refitted head with new head gasket and re assembled engine then started it up and after a few turns it started and sounded really good i let it get up to temperature and checked for usuall leaks all good so far but then when i stopped it it would not fire up again it would just turn on the starter so i left it overnight and fully charged the battery fitted the battery and started the engine and again sounded good no noises or smoke from exhaust but when i stopped it again and tried to start it it wouldn't , I have fitted a second hand high pressure pump but has made no difference the car starts when it wants to but as soon as i turn it off it won't start again until i leave it for a while but there is no consistency. I have found that the glow plug relay does not power up the glow plugs until the engine is turning over and then it stays on for a good few minutes which in my experience should not happen so iv'e removed the plug from the relay , Iv'e checked earth points numerous wires if any body has any ideas it would be much appreciated.

Hi Pete no its completely dry, this problem only started after doing the work on it, the only thing different is the cam pulley would this make a difference?

Hi & welcome aboard. 8)

Looking at your other post, you have a HDi 90, probably with a Siemens fuel system, (which relies on the suction from the HP pump to draw fuel from the tank Bosch systems have an in-tank lift pump). A tiny leak at the filter or fuel pipes can allow fuel to drain back to the tank, preventing the HP pump from drawing it back up. If this is the case the priming bulb will go soft.
Try pumping the bulb & see if it will start.....

HDi's will normally start easily without glow plugs, they just don't idle as smoothly for the first half minute or so.

Ok, as I said in first post the only part I changed was the camshaft pulley. It's common fault on these engines that when the timing belt snaps the camshaft woodruff key breaks I changed the pulley but it wasn't the same one and that's what the problem was I fitted a new pulley today and the car starts first time every time. One happy pug owner once again
