BE4 gearbox - missing bolt - M8x1.25?

Hi all,

spying a transmission oil leak, I discovered that there was a bolt missing from the front lower area of the box.
I've temporarily cut down a bolt and fitted it with a washer to a short enough length to act as a "plug".
I cut it down so that I can be sure that isn't going to interfere with the mechanism, but obviously need to fit an appropriate length bolt.

However I can't access the diagrams on service box and no amount of google, youtube or forum searches etc have helped.

If anyone could tell me the dimensions/spec of this bolt, especially the length - I would be most grateful.

thank you all.

I've been squinting at the diagrams but the only screw I can see in that general area is the one that seems to be holding the reverse shaft  I can't tell if it's inside the box or outside and we have to ignore the fact that the RPO is well out of range for a 406...(the earlier diagrams show no screw anywhere)

I'm highly dubious but I really can't see owt else.

Ah - fantastic specs - thank you.

The angle of component 70 - 693304 looks about right, and the description "Capscrew" along with the dimensions - 8x125-50 seem about right too.
So I'm guessing that this should be a 50mm long bolt. I'll have a look at lunchtime and check the length of the one that I made up on Monday - If only I had thought to measure it at the time!
Thank you for your help - I appreciate that this may be guesswork - but as I say, it looks "about" right.

Thankfully, the car itself got through it's MOT, although I have a lovely list of tasks to attend to over the coming months.

Well I happily cut a thread onto a 10mm M8 bolt, cut it to 50mm long and rounded the end off, slipped a washer on with a drop of thread lock and installed it.
The gearbox seems pretty happy in all gears.
Thank you for your help steve_earwig.

Ah splendid :cheesy: You are most welcome 8) I was worrying that maybe the shaft had slipped along a bit and you'd never get it in there.

While I was oot and a boot today it occurred to me to look in the repair manual:

That's the first time I ever found anything useful in there...

I had to look that up, daNm are dekanewtons (why are they using such a mad unit?), 14.75ft-lbf +/- 3.69

Ah - I suppose the fact that it went in without issue (no threading issues at all) suggests that it did go in correctly.

I looked up decanewtons too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deca- - i guess i's logical enough - deka/deca = 10x - not a decimal unit that I'm familiar with. I have playfully considered using "deci-metres" for a laugh in the past.

Thank you for the confirmation diagram from the repair manual - I really appreciate it.
