It's a cable, can't help with the rest, sorry.

As far as I remember a 1.9 is cable (Service Box is down again, down again, down again, Service Box is down again, what a piece of crap). from what I remember the cable should have a nylon lining which, once worn out, means the cable is scrap, lubricant will only work for a short while. I suppose it might be helpful to lubricate it, just so you know if it's the problem. Something with PTFE if available, or maybe molybdenum, but it won't last long.
