406 HDI top engine rubber (Support) mount

Post by pugmax »

Today my mechanic tried to tighten up the top engine rubber support mount due to a clunking sound I reported him which I couldn't figure out where that sound come from. after checking other mounts/ ball-joints, etc, he decided to tighten the top engine rubber support mount. then supporting by the jack under the engine he reached to tighten the rubber mount. That mount has three notches. using a one of notch he did some whacks with a chisel to tighten. Now it looks like in following attached picture. Is there any negative impact by damaging the rubber? I think this is not the correct way of tightening that rubber mount. if so what is the correct way? i am worrying due to this and thinking of replacing it with a new support rubber mount. Should I replace this or living with this until any matter arise? appreciate your help.

I wouldn't think a small bit of damage to the lip of the mount will make it fail, my opinion only.
Was the mount loose? Did it fix the 'clunk'?
When are you getting this noise?

my mechanic said mount was loose and he was able to tighten more. and he said there were no signs on notches that previously tried to tighten same way and it was only hand tightened previously.

it is not very loud clunk when I depressed the clutch quickly in low gears like engine is knocking slightly.

There is an other occasional noise when do a full turn to left in very low speed, sound come from right side but not always. he inspect the lower engine mount/ ball-joints/ rack-ends/ tie-rods and suspension bushes/ links and all were in good condition then he suspected the top driver-side rubber mount which is in the picture I posted.

He said that there is gel like something inside that rubber mount, why I am so much bothering is any possibility that it could be leaked eventually due to the damage in the notch.

I thought they were just rubber.
I have changed that mount on mine a long time ago, don't remember it being difficult.
Usually if you are getting 'overrun backlash', that is you take your foot off it goes CLONK you pick up the power it goes CLONK, usually that's the dogbone.
If you are getting noises on full lock and htrottle on/throttle off, could also be a CV.

Did tightening the top mount reduce the noise or make no difference?

It makes no difference. I still get the noise. he said lower engine mount cracked a little bit but that shouldn't make any noise at this time, but i think sometimes it could be the culprit. he said dogbone is so far ok.
