Can you hear the fuel pump in the tank running when you turn on the ignition, it will usually only run for a few seconds but you should be able to hear it. If not you probably have a relay or wiring fault. If it is, disconnect the filter inlet pipe and see if there is actually fuel arriving there.

Could well be an electrical problem. My previous 406 had the same problem, it usually started but sometimes just refused. A few hours (or a day) later it would start just fine.

Check the BM34 box, the fuse box in the engine compartment (google for BM34 and look at the images). Remove all fuses one by one and use electrical contract spray to clean the contacts before reseating. Make sure to remove, clean and re-attach the earth straps. A bad electrical contact can make the difference between a starter and a non-starter.

If it is not the (low pressure) fuel pump and all electrics are ok, then the last thing that i can think of is the high pressure fuel pump, or the rail pressure sensor.

If i recall correctly there needs to be at least 200 bar of rail pressure detected before the engine management will start operating the injectors.

A too low pressure can be caused by a failing pump, but it can (more often) also be caused by a leaking injector or bad plumbing (fuel pipes / connectors).

With PP2000 you could monitor the detected rail pressure while cranking.

Here is an interesting story of some-one with a similar problem: https://citroenc3owners.com/diesel-citr ... l?start=20 .

Thanks Jasper if I decide to play with it any more I will get in touch, I really like the car I've had it 8 years and I love driving it, most comfortable car I've ever had for motorway driving, but I think it's come to an end, the clutch is on its way out and other things need doing, I can't justify spending much more money on it. My daughter lives in Darwin practically next door to Blackburn.
