Steering Rack Replacement
Posted: Fri Mar 30, 2007 5:14 pm
So, Easter weekend ( subject to weather ) is the weekend I've got lined up to replace the rack on my d8 2.1DT.
It's pissing out about a litre every couple of days ( do about 80 miles per day ), and all the pipes are ok. The rubber boots are dripping fluid at an alarming rate.
The rack I'm getting is off a d8 V6 so it will be variable.
Anyone done this job before ? I know the 2.1 is a big beast so access will be a bitch, but I've already been under and it doesn't look too bad for the job.
As far as I can see..
1) Crack off the trackrod ends.
2) Take off the pipes ( the fluid is already practically drained
)
3) Undo the two bolts securing the rack to the subframe.
What next...
Presumably I have to disconnect the rack / valve block from the column, would this be the bit where the speed input plugs in ?
Oh, and presumably the track rods come away from the rack itself ?
I propose to drop the rack straight down, and if there are any issues, straight out the LHS weel arch.
Cheers
