Accelerator cable retaining clip.

Hiya All, just came back from dover, and no power, hdi 90 2002, scary on motorway max power 2000-2500, 60- 70mph , foot flat on floor accelerator pedal, well when i got home had a quick look in engine bay and found no retaining clip on acceleration cable. Why would this happen ? And is this the power loss cause? .
And most important when i get a new spring how do i adjust the cable so its back to it was before power loss.

Maybe it wasn't put on right or it just broke, stuff happens.

Pull all the slack out of the throttle cable and insert the clip in the closest whole groove you can see - don't force it. I think that should work. Or get someone to stand on the throttle, put the throttle pot full open with the cable and then stick the clip in the closest whole groove - if you force it in any closer the clip will probably break. Hold on a mo...

No clip will definitely affect the performance.
As Steve says taking as much slack out of it as possible without changing the idling speed is your best bet.
To be 100% certain it's right you need PP2000 diagnostic software, but from experience if you minimise the lost motion it will be capable of registering 0% foot off and 99% about half an inch before pedal meets carpet, (which is perfect).

Hi guys, thanks for the replys, well have fixed it cant believe it, as it goes held the accelerator pedal highest point it would go away from floor, and taken up slack in cable in engine, and replaced pin, with a little movement in cable, finger presure 2-3mm movement. And revs ok no problem. Took her for a spin and the power difference is amazing, feel such a fool, over thought things, thought engine was on its last legs, 2222256 genuine miles on clock, and she now feels like she just come out the showroom again.

I bought an 110 HDI 406 a few years back and the seller was getting rid as it couldn't tow their caravan,i drove it home and it was pretty gutless to be honest but i'd never driven another so could not compare,after a week or so i investigated and found the clip on the cable had jumped back and full throttle was in fact only half throttle,i took out the slack and re-positioned the clip,the car flew,it smoked like a trooper for about 5 miles as i reckon it had never been over half throttle for the 3 or so years the previous owners had had it,no wonder it wouldn't pull their caravan.

Great story grassmere 59, just shows what can happen, i cant believe how much more power my car has over a simple fix like this.
