406 2.0 hdi Cambelt change mileage?

Post by imartin »

Hi,

I've a 2003 406 2.0 hdi estate.

I bought it in 2011 when it had covered only approximately 30,000 miles. Being eight years old at the time, the cam belt was changed prior to purchase.
This year it has now clocked up 111,000 miles so is getting close again to needing the cam belt change.

Is the advice still for 80,000 or eight years? The Ford dealership that carried our the service and MOT thought the interval might have been raised.

On the basis that I'm going to have to get it done imminently what else should I have done at the same time?

I've heard that it makes sense to have the water pump replaced at the same time, anthing else?

I believe the 'correct' interval is 90k miles / 5 years. I have seen various mileages quoted, 72k, 80k, 90k but all seem to insist on 5 years.
It's sensible to change, (or at least examine and consider changing the idler & tensioner pulleys). Maybe swap the aux drive belt too - I did the aux belt tensioner and idler too but they looked fine after 12 years / 130k miles.

Most people recommend changing the water pump - I changed mine when I did the timing belt 4 years ago. The old pump looked like brand new, as did the coolant and the internal water passages.

It is 96,000 miles / 10 years under standard conditions (80,000 miles / 5 years under harsh conditions).

This is the document from Peugeot Servicebox.

[The extension pdf has been deactivated and can no longer be displayed.]

The other years (1999...) give the same information.

Hi,

Thanks both for the very helpful replies.

It looks like I have around 15,000 miles in hand to get to the 96k figure. I do just over 10k at the moment so I guess I'll get it done before 12 months is up.

I've got a couple of (minor) advisories from the MOT which I probably need to have checked over beforehand.

I'll take onboard your advice re the idler & tensioner pulleys when I do get it done - thanks.

I had been wondering whether the combined cost of the belt changes etc and the advisories was going to be more than the car is worth - guess I'll soon find out!

At a certain age, filling up the fuel tank might be enough to double the value of these cars :cheesy:

It's worth knowing that HDi cambelt failures are not really a 'thing' on this forum or rather they're not known for snapping belts at random however you should get it done if you value the car for your own use.

They would be more likely to suffer a tangled Aux Belt which then snaps the cambelt; this is something we've heard of.

Many thanks for that bit of info - very helpful.

I'm expecting to get the work done in stages, to spread the cost over a few months rather than have to fork out for it all at once.

I recently bought a 2.0. Hdi 206 estate for my wife, there is no history and the aux belt looks very worn so I am replacing it but the cambelt looks as good and tight as the one on my 406 which I changed last year so I shan't bother with that one at the moment. As was mentioned, spontaneous cambelt failure on these engines is rare.

I bought a BX TZD turbo some years ago which looked very well maintained so I assumed, incorrectly, that the cam belt had been changed, it failed at 114k miles, somewhat considerably in excess of the recommended mileage.

True story:

I once bought a Mazda MX6 with the 2.5V6 petrol engine, it had low miles but was 3 YEARS overdue a cambelt, a very nervous trek back home with it and got it straight in for a new belt.

The old belt was perfect

Must've changed a dozen or more timing belts over the years. Don't recall ever seeing one that didn't look perfect.
That's why it's called preventive maintenance I guess.
