Glowplugs (HDi)

Hi

I'm occasionally getting the glowplug light staying on for about 10-15 secs when going to start the car from cold and the engine then doesn't turn over. After several attempts, the engine does fire but it then sounds like 'a bag of spanners' for a few secs and then goes back to normal.

This is only when car has been left for several hours and doesn't happen all the time. When the car has been running, subsequent engine turnovers are fine and the glowplug light goes out almost instantly.

I'm also getting an 'engine temperature too high' message occasionally after starting the engine from cold (it soon goes off)

Could it be a faulty coolant temperature sensor sending an incorrect engine temp to the ECU hence causing the glowplugs indicator light issue? Battery voltage is fine.

This is on a DW12TED4 2.2 engine.

Edit to add: I have been getting the 'engine temperature too high' message on cold starts before the glowplug light issue started happening.

Thanks

Hi, it certainly sounds plausible.
I would definitely change the CTS, I don't think they are too expensive - and has been suggested before that you can plug the new sensor in before fitting it to see if it changes things.
It's not an issue I ever had in my 2.2hdi, in fact I've never changed a glowplug on any 406..

+1 HDi's will start easily without the glow plugs working.
I've had a faulty CTS that caused more or less the symptoms you describe.
Connecting a new one without inserting it into the thermostat housing should prove a faulty sensor by restoring normal cold running behaviour.
There not expensive, definitely the first thing to try.

I had a set of Bosch Duraterm glowplugs (Bosch part no. GLP013 0250202032) and got them fitted when the coolant temperature sensor was being fitted. Thought I would get them fitted given we are coming into winter.

The glowplug light now goes out almost instantly and no more hesitant starts and 'bag of spanners' sounding engine for a few seconds when that happened. Also, I now don't get the 'engine temperature too high' message every other day when the engine is cold.
