2006 407 2.7 HDI Oil leak ?

Post by 406owner2 »

i know this is not a 407 forum, but since this forum and great bunch of people here helped me so much with my 406, i thought maybe i should give it a try....

I hope there is someone here with 407 engine experience that could possibly shed some light ?
I have finally upgraded my old 1997 406 after many years of reliable service and many things i fixed up through the years, to a 2006 407 coupe

Now i know everything was not perfect before the purchase of the 2006 407, but i cannot seem to pinpoint the oil leak, after cleaning the engine, it's little but it's there, leaves a little stain on the ground when parked, i have taken it to 2 workshops.

Both of them say the leak is coming from the sump gasket, however, then i took the car one last time to someone who has more time to do a diagnosis.

He said that the oil seems to be on top of the sump, and there is a thick pipe that is very lightly moist, a water pipe ? that is above the sump.

I told him could it not perhaps be that the oil gets blown upward on top of the sump from the sump gasket as the car moves forward and the wind pushes it up ?

He said he does not thinks so, he wants me to bring the car to him tomorrow so he can remove the exhaust and various other things so we can try and see if there is anything to see ?

Does anyone know what it could be ? Anything or any advice that can assist us tomorrow will be of great help ?

Could be running down from a rocker cover gasket.

I think the same engine was used on the Jaguar S type and Land Rover Discovery to name but a few.
Maybe one of those forums would have the answer.
(I suspect there's not much about oil leaks that Landy owners don't know).....

Thank you both, i have not tried the facebook pages and the jaguar landrover sites, i will do so now thanks !

Could anyone perhaps tell me how big of a job it is to replace the cambelt on the 2.7 hdi motor that i have ? I have had quotes ranging from 5k to 16k ? (that is sa rands) that would be R270 pounds to 900 pounds UK

I just do not know who to believe and what to replace or how much i should pay ?
Peugeot SA is asking nowhere near that for the cambelt kit (around 140 pounds) with pulleys/tensioners

An old mechanic of 50 years in the industry (not peugeot though) tells me pulleys don't need to be replaced, his argument is, why do they need replacement, the belt is rubber like and the pulley is metal, what wears out, the belt or the pulley.

It looks like a very big job with lots of labour time.

The pulleys MUST be replaced, including the tensioner!!!!
Think about it...the pulley may be metal and the belt rubber but each pulley has BEARINGS and therefore can fail!
It's basic common sense...I've had 48 years in the industry btw....now retired.
There is a video on youtube which shows the Landrover engine timing belt replacement.

Oil above the sump will not be related to the sump gasket leaking, it will be something higher, difficult to say what the problem is without looking....cleaning the engine with brake cleaner then running it with a light in the area affected could locate the leak, certainly my first item of consideration.

Listen to jasper's advice, he knows :)

Turbo Diesel engines can deposit oil in the airways to and from the intercooler, a fair bit of oil can collect in this way, the oil gets carried over from the seals in the turbo...this may be worth checking as it could be leaking out somewhere.

Oil vapour from the various breathers usually gets recirculated through the turbo, suspect this is where most of it comes from. As Welly says, it's got a habit of collecting at the bottom of the intercooler, but can be found on any hose connection the charge air passes through, including air dosers/inlet manifold(s)

+1 for Jasper 5,
With regards to the oil build up in intercoolers ect this is normally caused by low pressure on the hot boost side (a boost leak)
This causes a lack of pressure on the oil seals in the turbo ( they need this to keep the oil in  )

So when you get a boost leak through a leaking pipe / joint or intercooler a small amount of oil gets blown through the inlet side

When I rebuilt mine earlier this year ( I will post a thread, I promise  ) the top end oil leaks on mine were mostly from the cambox to head seal, this is done by gasket sealent which over time goes brittle and fails.
There were more leaks but this was the main culprit
Best sealant is loctite si 5660.
