turbo.... Any advice appreciated

Hi all, i HAVE searched but couldnt find what i want to know ( or maybe i cant search properly :oops: )

i have a boost gauge winging its way to me and also want to fit a manual boost controller- am i right in thinking 12psi is a reasonable amount to expect before i start changing engine components or melting things ???
So i could do with knowing how/where to plumb them in (pics would be REALLY helpful) :wink:

also where is the dump valve located please (again pics would be luvverley) and does anyone have a vent to atmosphere d/v on their petrol turbo? if so do these cars like them as i have a plan :o ...... that will save me the £60+ to buy one, and if it works will be a handy tip for you all .............

the story is i had a rover 600 turbo and what you do is remove the dump valve and put a metal plate to blank something off where the plunger hits then you drill 4-12 holes round the dump valve and then refit it and voila you have a vta dump valve..... it really did work aswell :P :P
I know you are probably all thinking i am mad as a hatter but beleive me it worked, and i am full of mad ideas that in theory will work and not cost a lot :|

just in case though does anyone have a spare i can buy if it goes ti*s up?

Dump valve comes off the right hand side as you look in the engine bay - black plastic - usually Bosch. I took mine off and plugged the return. Fitted an Baileys DV 26 EVO which is a twin piston one 'cos of the fuel injection (DV 24 is a single piston and only recommended for carbs) and it vents to air.

Nice new tight jubilees on the hoses and a new length of vacuum pipe and you'll notice a difference. Got a nice strong boost now on spool up. Might want to chop a 250mmx250mm of under bonnet insulation away above it to give you a nice audible whooosh :cheesy:

gonna have a looksie as araldite is my friend and it will always bung the holes back up lol

On the stock turbo 12 psi is what you will reach in 4th and 5th gear... with the manual boost controller and the gauge you will be able to set it as accurately as possible to 12 in all gears.... the 406 turbo has a brilliant boost control system... its gear based progressive.

what I would suggest is not passing the 1 bar mark, well in all honesty the ECU wont let you as you will get managment light activity and fuel / spark cut... unless you address this with a fuel cut defender ( FCD ). The stck turbo will boost to 22psi in bursts and this will not cause too many problems.... however, for reliability issues I only recommend 15-16psi on stock bearings and 270degree thurst bearing / plate.

If for some reason you want more... please fit a 360 thrust bearing kit! as a minimum!

As for your BOV, you need dual piston or an uprated recirc valve, the bosch will start to sound after 14psi boost, the only problem is you will lose a lot of spool time as it starts to leak pressure preventing the turbo from reaching max boost.... just like a split intercooler would! Not a good thing, so please do it properly :D

ok i promise not to start hacking and drilling things i.e i WILL spend money on it :shock:

I had always thought the stock setup ran at 7psi only? no idea about gear based progressive boost though - is this why its ECU/soleniod managed?

Yep...

Min boost is 0.3 bar and max boost is 0.9 bar, its done this way to retain traction in the first 2 gears as its cheaper to put on a car than full on traction control.....lol or at least thats why I believe its like that way !

or put another way it knows the car's speed and the engine revs...
