hunting idle ........ and 'tick tick tick'

she's huntin by +/- 75rpm when at idle. would anyone know the cause?

ive already removed the throttle body and cleaned it up, as well as the stepper motor with injector cleaner and wd40.

the car is a 1998 coupe 2.0L 16v.

And i have a tick tick tick noise coming from the engine somewhere! i can only describe the sound as coming for directly below the inlet manifold, between the branches going to cylinders 2 and 3. But the only thing i can see down there is plugs into something.
The tick sounds speed increases as the revs of the engine increases.

Thanks in advance for any help folks. just bought the car and would like to get her sorted asap.

I can confirm this,re the injectors; The other bit suggests maybe the air-con kicking in,which I was told by my garage causes the revs to instantly rise slightly.....

def the injectors? it only sounds like 1 is doing it though. :?

not sure about the air-con though. air-con is turned off, she's hunting all the time at idle, it has threatened to stall once in traffic.

My previoud 406,(D8) had this as you describe, and it was, rightly or wrongly, put down to the" rotary idle valve",but it was never proceeded with as the car was stolen for its alloys, damaged on recovery and written off , so I never did find out the true cause;Peugeot Brentwood tried to adjust it,but it was always there, and on a rapid stop ,for lights say,the brevs would take a dive after stopping !

A smilie is made up of characters.

For example, to get 8) you can click on the emoticon or type an 8 then a )

:? Is made up of a : then a ?

When you click submit, these characters are then converted to the smilies.

Hope this explains it :D

All the smilies are made up from a set of characters. ":" and ")" makes :), ":" and "D" makes :D, ":" and "lol" and another ":" makes  etc..... it just so happens that the characters for 8) are "8" and ")". It's caught me out loads of times when talking about my D8 in backets, to get 'round it just leave a space between the 8 and the ) :x

Sorry for the thread hijack philg

As you were... :D

Re: the ticking, if it's bad you should be able to tell if it's an injector just by touching their plugs when the engine's running. You can really feel the tick on my cylinder 4 :(

Why do they tick then?

Yes i'd like to know as well, although I presume its quite simply the tiny spurts of petrol vapour being ejected within,as I cannot imagine any mechanical means of creating the sound...please correct me if i'm wrong

By "hunting" i understand that the engine revs go up an down at a fairly regular pattern. If so, mine does that if I'm sitting at the biting point on the clutch at traffic lights on an upward slope.

As for the ticking.... my 2.0L lump has been doing that for a good 70k miles now. Some suggest its the lifters or tappets. Others the injectors.
Whatever it is, it does not affect the engine.
