Hello all,
Once more, another problem with my new diesel. Is a bit hesitant starting - one cylinder takes before teh rest and if i rev slightly the engine fires up. Previous owner says the glowplugs are proper dead and is posting me a new set he ordered once they arrive.
My query is how do you change glowplugs? Do they just screw out like spark plugs? I know petrol engines quite well but diesels are a different story. I heard rumours that the fuel pump is in the way of one of the glowplugs...any idea how I go about changing them?

Yep, remove them exactly like spark plugs. Just remeber the way the cables and pipes are connected. Access to the first one (left hand) may be awkward, depending on if the engine is a 1.9 or 2.1

both the 2.1 and 1.9 can be a bit of a pig to get out, the 1.9 is easier, but they snap off very easily

i just did 4 plugs on a 306 yesterday. and have done several sets before on other 306's.
the left most cylinder can be hard to get to if you have a bosch pump, but if you have a lucas its easy.
To remove them on a 306 you remove the intercooler (not nescessary on a 406, but i'd persume you'd have to remove the intercooler pipe to the inlet manifold).
Then undo the 8mm nut on the cylinder num 3, this is the feed to the plugs.
Remove the other 8mm nuts on each plug.
then you can remove the wire that joins all 4 plugs.
now use your 12mm socket to remove each plug. You will not be able to reach plug 2 with the socket and will require a 12mm spanner.
on the 306 i did yesterday the plugs were extremely easy to undo, and i did not need to remove any coolant/fuel pipes to gain access to the plugs. BUT on another 306 i did the plugs were seized into the head, this car also had a bosch pump, and i had to remove a fuel line to get access to the plugs. Because the plugs were siezed in i accidentally(sp) rung the 12mm head off the plug, so i hammered on a 11mm socket (took alot of hammering) and got them out.
To test the plug once it was out i connected a wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the larger thread on the plug, and a wire from the neg terminal to the small thread of the plug. If you plan on testing this way then hold the plug in a pair of pliers as it will get VERY hot. If the plug is working great it should glow red hot in about 9seconds.... if it takes 11secs or more change it for a new one.
You can test the plugs when in the car but its not very reliable in my opinion. When the plug is still in the engine, and the wire which joins the 4 plugs removed run a wire for the battery positive. just tap this wire against the small (8mm bolt) thread on the plug, alot of sparks mean its a goodun, no sparks or a weak spark means its buggered. I dont like doing it this way but it is an option.
If you have just tested the plugs do not touch them for approx 10mins afterwards as they WILL be HOT!!!.
When you are refitting the plugs put some copper grease on the larger thread, this will stop them siezing into the head.
The total time for a full 4 plug change on a 306 is about 50mins providing none are siezed. I would persume it would take a little bit less on a 406.
******* be careful NOT to drop the 8mm nuts, you will not get them back!!!!, buy a few new ones bore you start the job just in case ************
